March 23, 1932 - December 29, 2019
It is with great sadness that we say farewell to our loving husband, father and grandfather,
Walter Daniel Sokoluk who passed unexpectedly on Sunday, December 29, 2019 in Peterborough, Ontario. He was 87. His full heart failed and ours are broken.
From his boyhood in the Ukrainian community in Kirkland Lake to Queen’s University at Kingston, to his career teaching mathematics at Algonquin Composite and Widdifield Secondary Schools (North Bay) and as Vice Principal at Northern Secondary (Sturgeon Falls), Dad was a man of great enthusiasms.
Whether playing piccolo in his math class, making wine, or enjoying a brandy and a cribbage match at our Lake Nosbonsing cottage or Trout Lake home, Dad’s passion and innovative spirit prevailed.
Music was a constant; playing fife in the Fort Henry Guard in Kingston, singing in glee clubs and choirs, leading high school bugle bands, playing his beloved violin with the North Bay Symphony Orchestra, or a fine fiddle tune with local friends.
While President of the Ontario Association of Teachers of Mathematics, he helped bring the annual OATM conference to the north for the first time--a proud accomplishment.
Whether curling at the Granite Club or socializing at the 183 Club, Dad always had a big smile on his face and a story to share.
There was nothing Dad loved more than a family gathering. Cribbage tournaments, music, singing and merriment always prevailed. We are eternally grateful to have spent this past Christmas together as a family one last time.
He will be greatly missed by Yvonne, his wife of 62 years, daughters Dianne Latchford (husband Chris), Sandra Swilley, Wendy Sokoluk (husband Jim Okamura) and grandchildren Colin, Matthew, Alexandra and Taro. He was predeceased by his dear sister, Anne Drozd.
A private family burial will be held. A Celebration of Life will be scheduled in the spring in North Bay. Details to be announced.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Queen’s University Alumni Association, the North Bay Symphony, Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, Canadian Diabetes, or a charity of your choice.Online condolences can be made at comstockkaye.com
