I had the good fortune to meet Coach Art at his YMCA boxing class and to see first hand his passion for helping others. It was clear from the beginning that he had a positive effect on so many lives. 

Later at the FitPit had the pleasure get to know Gil, Josh and others who were all inspired by Art's leadership and generosity.

He will be missed.

I worked with Art years ago when I was in Victim Services with TCSO. I am just so very sorry. He was such a nice man. 

Dear Cardenas Family:
I will forever remember art as a stand up guy. We worked together almost 3 decades and I learned a lot from him as an enforcement officer and as a genuine human being, man of faith and somebody who you could always count on in a pinch. And in our line of work the pinches came often and were at time life threatening. Art was  always there to lend support, encouragement, constructive critiques and a lot of tough or soft love. I miss him and will stay in touch. Art supervised my wife Kelly. She just loved his caring and supportive style even when they disagreed professionally. Art also supervised my mother in law Sandee, she too loved  Art and his leadership and compassionate management style.

You were one of the first boxing coaches I ever met and I regretted never meeting you earlier in life. You were a solid foundation and I enjoyed leaning on you even though you never knew it. Thank you so much. We will Hold the Line from here sir. 

I met Art at my husband’s boxing gym.  I learned very quickly Art was a man of great integrity. He carried himself in such a way his character could never be questioned.  He cared deeply for those around him and led by example.  One of the things I admire most about Art is that even though he held many positions of authority, he did it with a servants heart.  He will be missed. Connie, Josh & Paul - thank you for sharing Art with all of us; you are loved and in our prayers. 

My deepest condolences to my sister Connie and my nephews Josh and Paul. I have many memories of Art. My sister Lucy and I stayed with Connie while she was pregnant with AJ and in the middle of the night she went into labor, unknown to us as we were sound asleep Connie called Art as he was patrolling. He came to pick her up and was on their way to the hospital to have their first son♥️ My love for the beach came from Art and Connie who always went and had included me one year when I had my first vacation as a young adult. We stoped in San Antonio to visit his Beautiful Mom Eva who always welcomed everyone with love and grace. His love for his family and faith made an everlasting impression on my heart.

The memory of this beautiful man will be for a blessing.  I met him many years ago when the Jewish Community Relations Council went to meet with the Travis County Sheriff's Department regarding treatment of undocumented immigrants.  He was deeply concerned.  Later, we interviewed him about violence and the death penalty:  his insights came from his deep compassion and spiritual commitments.  Finally, I was fortunate enough to work out at his gym for some time.  That was an inspiring place:  women, men, kids, people of all ages, working to become more disciplined and stronger.  He inspired me in many ways and I am sorry he is gone.  I trust that his family will find comfort in sweet memories, his legacy, and community.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Arthur U. Cardenas and Eva Cardenas and son, Arthur Alberto Jesus Cardenas. He is survived by his wife, Connie Cardenas; sons, Joshua and Paul Cardenas; sister, Celina Garcia; brothers, Gilbert and Mike Cardenas; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
