Barbara lived a rich and colorful life defined by strength, intelligence, generosity, and an unmistakable spark that brought light to everyone around her. Born in 1947, she began her career as a bilingual operator with AT&T—an early testament to her sharp mind and excellent communication skills. She later joined her mother and uncle in running Melba’s Boutique, a beloved ladies’ fashion shop named after her mother. As the family business transitioned, Barbara took the helm as sole proprietor, continuing to serve her community with style and grace until her retirement.
She is survived by her loving husband, Ron Wagenfuehr; her two sons, Robert and James Mebane; and her five treasured grandchildren: Dr. Nova Mebane, Dr. Neva Mebane, Will, RJ, and Wes Mebane. To each of them—and to many others—she was a guiding force, a source of warmth, wisdom, and unwavering support.
Barbara was known not only for her fashionable flair but for her fierce loyalty, quick wit, and nurturing heart. She had a rare ability to make people feel seen, heard, and valued. Whether offering sage advice, a hearty laugh, or a playful comeback, Barbara brought energy and honesty to every conversation.
Never one to fade quietly into the background, she was vivacious, full of life, and always ready with a story. She embraced every role she played—wife, mother, grandmother, friend—with love and conviction. She was the “mother hen” to all, keeping her flock close, cared for, and comforted.
Barbara’s presence will be deeply missed, but her spirit lives on in the countless lives she touched with her kindness, sass, and sparkle.
A private celebration of life will be held by the family. In honor of Barbara, those wishing to pay tribute are encouraged to share a story, reach out to someone they love, or simply live boldly and generously—just as she did every day.
