

Billy Joe Akers, 84, of Buda and Austin, Texas passed away in the presence of his family on December 28, 2013. He was born on June 3, 1929 to Edward and Odessa Akers of Wilson, OK. He was the oldest of seven children. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Edward and Charles Akers of Lamar, CO.
He has been and will be always remembered by his wife Grace M. Akers of 59 years; his daughter Jeanne M. and husband Kevin Turek; his granddaughters Hannah Grace Marie and Hailey Ann Marie; his sisters Bobby Brophy (Roger) of Palmer, AK; Wanda Powell of Portland, OR; Mary Taylor (Harold) of Midland, TX; and Carolyn Thompson of Lamar, CO; his sister-in-law Edith Akers of Lamar, CO; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Billy was a 20 year veteran of the United States Air Force, including the Korean War and had received numerous commendations including the Bronze Star and Meritorious Service Medal. He especially enjoyed the fellowship and camaraderie of his fellow veterans. He retired from the City of Austin Water and Wastewater Department having achieved the position of Supervisor 2. He was a member of the American Legion Post 83 in Austin, TX and a lifetime member of The Masonic Lodge in Altus, OK.
In lieu of flowers the family is requesting donations to the Wounded Warrior Project.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00pm on Thursday, January 2 with a visitation held the hour prior in the Memorial Chapel of Cook-Walden Capital Parks Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Cook-Walden Memorial Hill Cemetery in Pflugerville, Texas.
