Debbie was born on March 8, 1953 in Chillicothe, Ohio. She was the oldest of two daughters born to parents Robert and Muriel Friend.
Her father was in the military, so Debbie spent her youth living with her family in Texas, Germany and Virginia. After graduation, Debbie took a job with the United States Postal Service in Falls Church, Virginia where she worked as a clerk for 20 years. In October of 1976, her daughter Jenny was born. Debbie married Lynn Rathman on May 11, 1980. Lynn died unexpectedly in 1986. Following an injury, in 1991 Debbie moved from Virginia to Texas and settled in the Pflugerville area to be closer to her sister Diane Hawken.
Debbie mostly enjoyed sewing, antiquing, sunbathing and dancing; especially dancing. At home, she loved crafting with her granddaughter Danielle, spending quality time with her sister Diane, and piddling around in her backyard with her dogs.
Debbie was preceded in death by both of her parents Robert Friend and Muriel Lynn; her husband, Lynn Rathman; and brother-in-law, John Hawken.
She is survived by her daughter, Jennifer Potter (Tom Howard) of Granger; her sister, Diane Hawken; half-brother, Russell Friend; Granddaughters, Danielle Jakobeit (Zachary Fisher II), Courtney Delaughter; Grandson, Dustin Hight; Great Grandson, Zachary Fisher III and nephews, Matthew, Neil, Joseph and Jacob Hawken.
Debbie will be laid to rest, next to her husband Lynn, at National Memorial Park, in Annandale, Virginia. A celebration of life will be held at a later date to be determined.
