Dorothy Williams Canipe, 93, peacefully transitioned from this earth on January 6, 2026, due to complications from vascular dementia. For the past 25 years she called Georgetown, Texas home; she passed away in the memory care center at The Hacienda at Georgetown.
Dorothy Jean Williams was born in Newport, TN, on July 25, 1932, to Hubert Ellis Williams and Bessie Jane Kyker. She grew up in Newport, Tennessee, attended Newport Grammar School and graduated with the Cocke County High School Class of 1950. She graduated from Mars Hill College in Mars Hill, NC, in 1952, and then attended East Tennessee University where she earned her teaching accreditation.
On November 3rd, 1951, she met the love of her life, Marcus David Canipe, in the parlor of Stroup Dormitory at Mars Hill. He was home on furlough from the Air Force and visiting his brother Earl. Mark and Dot were married on June 27, 1953, and celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary six months ago, a month before his passing. They began their life together in Knoxville, TN, where her husband began a 47-year career in the pest control business. Dot briefly worked at Western Auto in Knoxville before the birth of their first of four children.
As her husband's career developed, Dot was instrumental in raising her children, managing a household that would involve multiple moves, the buying and selling of houses; changes in schools, churches, and activities; as well as meeting, making, and leaving friends. Their moves included stops in Columbia, TN; Little Rock, AR; Doraville, GA; Wichita, KS; Merriam, KS; Austin, TX (twice); Claremont, CA; Grapevine, TX; and Upland CA. Each stop provided wonderful memories and friendships that Dot nurtured through the years. After Mark and his partner sold their business, they retired to Georgetown, TX, in 2001, to be close to their two daughters and grandchildren.
Dot re-entered the workforce after her children were grown, working at retirement homes in Austin and Claremont, and as an office administrator at Bluebonnet-Tex Pack, a freight handling company. As the spouse of a business owner, she was frequently called up to handle a variety of critical, yet unpaid, duties.
Since her earliest days in Newport, Dot made friends easily and quickly, whether it was at church or school functions, activities involving her kids, or in community service. She was a member of the Georgetown Area Republican Women's organization for two decades, and she and her husband served as delegates to the Texas Republican convention.
Dot made friends easily and quickly. She had "the gift of gab" and whether it was a phone call, a neighborly visit, or a formal gathering, she knew how to keep a conversation going. She was a prolific letter writer; she sent cards on all occasions, including "just because." She kept in touch with friends and neighbors across the country. She was the hub of communications that kept her children and family members aware of what the others were doing. An hour-long phone call was merely a warm-up.
She had a world-class memory - an innate ability to recall people, places, events, and trivia that had been long-forgotten by others. She was an avid reader who kept track of the books she read... one notebook lists 694 books read over a 42-year span. She was a strong, resilient woman who faced cancer, then defied the odds and beat it more than 40 years ago. She had an eye for fashion and a sense for a good bargain and applied those skills. If shopping was a sport, she would have been an all-star in the big leagues, and yet she loved giving to others even more than adding to her own wardrobe.
Dot was preceded in death by her husband, Marcus, her parents, Hubert and Bessie, her sister Sara and brother Paul, She is survived by her children, Marcus, Jr. (Carol) of Overland Park, KS, Marty Canipe-Lax (Jim) of Austin, TX, Jan Beechinor (Will) of Austin, TX, and Brad Canipe (Karyn) of Dallas TX. She is also a proud grandparent of seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren (with another on the way) as well as numerous nephews and nieces.
The family will gather for a graveside service at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Funeral Home & Cemetery in Pflugerville, Texas. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to______
