Dorothy was born at home on the farm near Thorndale, TX\exas in 1925. She grew up in a Czech family on the family farm during the Great Depression. She graduated from the consolidated high school in Little River-Academy, Texas in 1942. She attended the University of Texas at Austin for a year and a half before stopping school to go to work for the War Effort in World War II. She worked for the War Department at Camp Swift doing clerical work to help supply the troops overseas until the end of the war. After World War II she worked for the City of Austin.
She married the love of her life, William A. ‘Bill” Lowery, in 1947. They moved to Dallas where she worked for Magnolia Petroleum Co. until they began a family. They had one daughter. After she was born Dorothy enjoyed being a mother and a homemaker. She enjoyed being a leader for Camp Fire Girls, raising dachshunds, and studying history. After her daughter was married, she returned to college earning a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History from the University of Texas at Arlington. She began studies for her Masters Degree in History which were cut short so she could care for her ailing husband.
Her husband of 52 years passed away in 1999. After that she returned to Central Texas to be closer to her daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren. She was thrilled to help welcome three great-grandsons into the world.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Colleen and Kerry Joe Brockman, her granddaughter Rebecca Thomas, her grandson Stephen Brockman, their spouses, her three great grandsons, and many nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to express their special thanks to Connie Castillo and Janice Gillespie for caring for her in her last years.
