Dwight Douglas Barker, 79, of Pflugerville, went to his Heavenly home and the full glory of God's presence on Wednesday, February 21, 2024. He was born June 16, 1944 in Cameron, Texas, to Hubert and Lottie Barker. Growing up in Manor, Dwight loved his family and playing 6 man football. He graduated from McCallum High School in 1962 and attended college at Southwest Texas State University. He was drafted as an air traffic controller and was sent to Vietnam. When his mother became ill, Dwight came home to help care for her and finished out his term at Fort Hood.
After his military service, Dwight worked for his father in the roofing business. He eventually opened his own roofing company which he ran for over 50 years. In 1968, Dwight met Jan Barrett and her son, Jimmy. They dated for 9 years before finally getting married December 17, 1977 in Austin. Dwight and Jan were married for 30 years before her death in 2007. The two of them, along with their 3 children, showed the rest of us how to make life fun.
Dwight was a faithful Christian and loved the Lord. He was a happy man who could have fun doing just about anything. Dwight enjoyed making others laugh and loved telling stories. He was a devoted father and adored his two granddaughters. We take comfort knowing that he is rejoicing with Christ and we will be reunited with him one day.
Dwight is survived by his son, Jim Barker, his daughter, Jill Johnson, her husband, Richard and their two daughters, Lottie and Ruby, sisters-in-law Wilma Barker and Jo Day, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Along with his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Jan, son, Clay, sister, Deanie Holland, brothers, Harry and Melvin, and sisters-in-law, Janice Barker and Georganna Swenson.
The family will receive friends 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., on Sunday, March 3, 2024 in the Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held 10:00 a.m., on Monday, March 4, 2024 in the Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Funeral Home, with the interment to immediately follow in the Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Honor Flight Austin, 1108 Lavaca St Ste #110 Box 609, Austin, Texas 78701.
