Elmo was born on March 19, 1925 in Cuero, Texas to Solon Leroy Sledge and Ruby Etta (Ferrell) Sledge. On May 28, 1967, he was confirmed at Redeemer Lutheran Church by Pastor Louis Pabor. He was a graduate of Waco High School, class of 1943. Elmo was a WWII veteran having served with the Signal Corps in the United States Army in the Aleutian Islands. He was employed with a career in electronics & scientific instruments working with companies such as Texas Nuclear, Columbia Scientific and even managed Anderson Lane Beauty Salon, after the death of Laura Sledge. Elmo was a caring, loving and truly devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend to so many. He will be forever remembered for his true one of a kind personality that was filled with fun-loving humor, knowledge about many things, and the ability to fix almost any electronic device. He was a longtime member of Redeemer Lutheran Church. Being a Ham Radio operator, (call sign K5-JOQ), bowling, and tinkering with electronics and anything mechanical were among his favorite pastimes. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Elmo married Laura Rebecca Rodgers in 1953 in York, Pennsylvania. She preceded him in death on November 15, 1966. Elmo then married Leona Albrecht Kretzschmar in 1967 in Austin, Texas.
In addition to his wife he is survived by his son, Scott Sledge and his wife Leta of Austin, Texas; stepdaughter, Kris Cué of Pflugerville, Texas; stepson, Edwin Kretzschmar and his wife Susan of Gainesville, Texas; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren; as well as many extended family members and close friends.
Elmo was preceded in death by his parents, Solon Sledge and Ruby Sledge Lloyd; his stepfather O.B. Lloyd; his brother, Everett Sledge; his sister, Pauline Sledge Sands; and his son, Kyn Keggan Sledge.
Visitation will be at Redeemer Lutheran Church,1500 West Anderson Lane, Austin, Texas 78757 on Tuesday, March 26, 2019 from 10:00 AM until the time of the funeral service at 11:00 AM. Pastor Dave Schroder and Pastor Kevin Westergren will be officiating. Interment will follow at Cook Walden Capital Parks Cemetery in Pflugerville, Texas.
