Ennis was welcomed at Heaven’s Gate on Saturday, May 28, 2022. Her time on this earth consisted of 96 years of well-lived life. Family and friends celebrate the blessing of being in her orbit; she will be greatly missed.
Ennis was born in 1925 in Fort Stockton, TX to Minnie (aka Honey) & Van Binion. Ennis was the middle child of five children...four (4) girls and the youngest, a boy. Her siblings were Doris Marks of Michigan; Eris Sanders of Kingsland, TX; Vannis Mathews of California & Del Binion of Hanover, TX. All of Ennis’s siblings preceded her in death.
When Ennis was a toddler, the family moved to Alpine, TX. She remained there through high school, even taking some of her senior year classes at Sul Ross College campus while her two older sisters were attending college there.
In Ennis's young adult life, she moved to Corpus Christi, TX. There her daughter, Jimmie Arlue, and her eldest son, Jerry, were born. After a relatively short period of time, Ennis (now a newly-single mom of two) moved to Austin to live with her parents, who now called Austin home.
It was in Austin that Ennis truly met the man of her dreams, James Owen (aka Jim) Bogle. She dated & then married this handsome firefighter on her son, Jerry's, 6th birthday...October 20, 1951. Slightly less than two years later, Ennis & Jim's son, Rusty, was born. The family was made forever complete when Jim Bogle officially adopted Jimmie Arlue and Jerry as his own!
Ennis and her family continued to reside in Austin, with the exception of a 22-year stint in Taylor from 1986-2008. Upon resigning from association management and moving to Taylor in 1986, Ennis & Jim bought Manor Grocery Store. They owned & operated it until retirement, at which time they began raising greyhounds! Ennis took care of Texas Greyhound Association's (TGA) accounting & payroll until 2007, at which time Ennis & Jim began preparing to move back to Austin.
In 2008, Ennis & Jim purchased a condo in Austin and began remodeling it for the anticipated move. One short month before the move, on 11/11/08, the Lord unexpectedly summoned her beloved husband, Jim, to Heaven. Ennis was also preceded in death by her daughter, Jimmie Arlue Hood, who passed into Heaven on Christmas Eve in 2018. These were times of deep sadness for all. Family and friends alike are now celebrating the fact that Ennis and all of her family and friends that preceded her in death are no longer separated by time and space. Ennis is survived by her two sons, Jerry Binion Bogle & wife Sherrye, and Russell Owen (aka Rusty) Bogle; as well as numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
When the three children were young, Ennis & Jim taught Sunday School at Rosedale Baptist Church in Austin. When the children grew, Ennis began launching her professional career. She went from being a PBX operator...to secretary for a law firm...to Executive Director of the Texas Society of Professional Engineers. In the 1960’s, Ennis had the honor of being one of only two women in the country (and the first woman in the State of Texas) to serve as CEO of an association. She enjoyed a very successful career, ranging from CEO of the Texas Greyhound Association to the CEO of the Texas Society of Professional Engineers. She was very active in the Texas Society of Association Executives (TSAE), having chaired numerous committees. She also served on the Executive Committee and Board of TSAE. Ennis obtained her professional accreditation, Certified Association Executive, which she maintained until her retirement. Ennis also became a charter member of the American Business Women’s Association (ABWA)-Austin and went on to serve as its president.
Ennis & Jim became charter members of Balcones Country Club (BCC) in Austin in 1966. Many friendships and fond memories were made at Balcones! In fact, Ennis remained a member until her passing. Except for the last few years of her life, she was very active in the BCC Women’s Association, helping with scholarship fund-raising each year. Her homemade Friendship Cakes were legendary delights. She would make 20 each year, and they would consistently sell out before Market Days would even begin. Ennis was an avid bridge and canasta player at the club, competing in many tournaments. She was a charter member of the New Beginnings Club, and enjoyed being a member of the NBC Bridge Club, as well.
Ennis read voraciously, traveled extensively to many countries of the world, socialized with gusto, and always had time for a friend or family member who needed a listening ear. She also crocheted for many years, and opened her festively-decorated home year after year to family, friends & surprise visitors who came to celebrate birthdays, holidays and other special occasions. It was especially delightful to secure an invitation to Ennis & Jim’s bay house in Rockport! A special shout-out of appreciation is in order to the Friday Night Group, as well as those friends in the Old Friends Dinner group. She will always remain in our hearts as a cherished & loved daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great great grandmother, aunt, sister-in-law, friend and beloved child of God➕
Finally, we are deeply grateful for Ken Missler and the entire staff of caregivers at Riva Ridge Assisted Living & Memory Care in Leander, TX, where Ennis was blessed to reside during the last 3 years & 7 months of her life. They were patient, loving, kind, resourceful, generous, fun-loving and always there for us!
A service celebrating Ennis’s life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 7, 2022 at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Funeral Home in Pflugerville. She will be laid to rest at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Cemetery.
