He was born on February 3, 1929, to Fermin and Cayetana Sanchez in Seguin, TX. At 15 years old, Fermin stretched the truth about his age to follow his brother into the military and joined the United States Army Air Corps. In 1947, when given the option, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and served for three decades.
He valued this service highly and attained the rank of Master Sergeant. As part of this service, he was deployed to Korea and participated in several tours in Vietnam to be with his brother and cousins. He earned several medals including a Bronze Star, Korea Service Medal, and a National Defense Service Medal. After retiring from the US Air Force in 1974, he went to work for Lockheed overseas as an educator of educators. After 20 years of traveling the world in this capacity, he decided to finally set roots in Pflugerville, TX with his wife Abebech.
