Floyd Edward Moten was born on April 26, 1932 in Travis County, Texas to Eli Moten, Sr. and Mary Yell Moten. He was one of six siblings born to this union. In addition to his parents, four siblings preceded him in death: Clemmy Nevels, Dorothy Turner, Eli Moten, Jr., and James L. Moten respectively.
Floyd received his formal education in the public schools of Austin where he attended L. L. Campbell Elementary, Kealing Jr. High, and L.C. Anderson High School. After graduation, Floyd enlisted in the United States Army where he began a career which lasted twenty years until his retirement on June 13, 1967. He served in two wars, the Korean and Vietnam and received numerous medals and commendations. The one he was most proud of was being selected to play for the Army Officer’s Golf Team. This accomplishment, along with his early childhood memories of being one of the first Black caddies on Austin’s golf courses, sparked his LOVE for the game. Golf was not a hobby but a passion for Floyd, who played at every opportunity. He earned the recognition of being state champion. At the time of his death, he was a member of the Traveler’s Golf Association. Upon retirement from the military, Floyd embarked on a new career at the University of Texas, Austin as a member of the police department. He retired from the department in February 1974.
On June 12, 1957, he married Barbara Diggs Moten (deceased) and was blessed with four children, Rikki (Deborah), Robin, Joy, and Monica who all survive him. He is also survived by his loving sister, Rena Moten Davis; grandchildren, Cinamon Moten, Cherri Moten, Shaun Stoffel, Mia Moten-Canady (Stacy), Barbara Moten-Leary, Courtney Moten, Christina Moten-Johnson, Regis Hall and Brooklyn Gillette; great-grandchildren, Shaun Stoffel II, Travis Edward Moten, Naja Franklin, Jaiyana Franklin, Sabriya Canady and Alaijah Canady; nieces, nephews and numerous friends.
On Thursday, August, 20, 2015, in the early morning hour, God dispatched an angel to free him of his pain and suffering and brought him home to be with Him.
