“Friend to All”
Frieda Mae Reabolt (“Friday”) Green, 82, of Austin, Texas, passed away on Tuesday, February 22, 2011.
“Friday” as she was known to friends and family, was born July 11, 1928 to Alice Bruning Reabolt and Herbert Reabolt in Royalton, New York, and grew up in Akron, New York.
After high school graduation, she moved to Kansas and attended radio school, after which she moved to Savannah, Georgia to work for Delta Airlines and was the first female voice in the control tower where she communicated with pilots and ground personnel.
She joined the U.S. Air Force Reserves March 19, 1950, and was honorably discharged November 18, 1952.
Friday met her husband, Benjamin F. Green, in Savannah where they were married December 30, 1950, and embarked on a life as a U.S. Air Force family, living in Lincoln, Nebraska; Denver, Colorado; Panama Canal Zone; Waco, Texas; Mesa, Arizona and Plano, Texas before retiring in Austin forty years ago.
Friday loved to converse with all, and for many years used her amateur radio and MARS (Military Affiliate Radio System) license as a “ham” radio operator while living in the Panama Canal Zone and elsewhere to run phone patches for soldiers on hospital ships who had been injured in Vietnam, as well as other people all over the world, so they could talk to their families in the States.
Friday loved being around and helping others: she was a Cub Scouts Den Mother when her sons were young while stationed at William AFB and living in Mesa; while living in Plano she sold Sarah Coventry jewelry to her friends and neighbors; in Austin she was very active with the Mesa Park Neighborhood Association and served as its President for one year; in her later years she spent many a night playing Bunco with her friends.
She was preceded in death by her loving parents and sister Carol Bloom.
Friday is survived by her husband of 60 years, Benjamin F. Green; daughter Nancy Kay Simpson (Mike); sons James William Green and John Roy Green (Roxanne); and grandchildren Thomas Austin Simpson and Kimberly Diane Wied.
