Gary was born in Austin, Texas, on September 28, 1944, and peacefully, returned home to his Lord and Savior, surrounded by his family and friends on July 15, 2010. He grew up in Austin and relocated to Round Rock where he lived with
his wife and family for the last 35 years.
Gary is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 43 years, Judy Welch Smith and his daughter Tiffany Smith and her sons Ronan and Garrick Wilson of Wichita Falls, his daughter Brettany Kokes and husband Kevin and their son Caden and daughter Brooke of Pflugerville and his Yorkshire Terrier companion Demi. Gary is also survived by his sister Nancy Bryant and her husband Everett of Austin, sister Peggy Jeffcoat and her husband Bob, of Ropesville, sister-in-law Mary Lynn Smith of Austin, sister-in-law Colleen Smith Langworthy of Tow, Texas and many beloved nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents Morris and Aileen Smith, and his two brothers Ronny Smith and Monte Smith.
Gary grew up in Austin as the youngest of five children. He was lovingly referred to as the "baby of the family." Gary graduated from Travis High School and then attended Southwest Texas State University before joining the Army Reserves. Judy and Gary met in 1964 and fell in love and have never been apart since. They were married on August 26,1967 in Austin. Gary would often refer to Judy through out their 43 years of marriage as his "beautiful bride." Gary and Judy will always be an example of what true love looks like.
Gary was a successful small business entrepreneur and owned multiple car washes, gas stations, oil lubes and storage units in the central Texas area. Gary was a great employer to many people during his career. He worked endless hours at all of his businesses to provide good customer care and service to all his customers. Many of his businesses were in Taylor and Georgetown, Texas and he was well known in those areas. A stranger to Gary was only someone he had not met. Gary was also a loyal Republican and let anyone and everyone know that.
Gary loved the three women in his life (wife and two daughters) and was so proud of his son-in-law, Kevin. He absolutely adored his three grandsons and granddaughter. And they LOVED their Grandaddy! Grandaddy loved watching them in anything they did. From watching Ronan race around the racetrack and getting the big win to Garrick impressing everyone with his quick witt. Grandaddy would marvel at how smart Garrick was! One of his favorite things to do was attend grandson, Cade's, baseball games. Grandaddy was known recently as the "Texas Tornadoes biggest fan" (although he was the biggest fan of player #48). His favorite thing to tell people about was when Cade made a homerun and said, "I did that for my Grandaddy!" He was thrilled to have his one girl in the bunch, his granddaughter Brooke. Grandaddy would proudly ask Brooke, "Who are you to your Grandaddy?" and she proudly would answer, "I am his Pride and Joy." Grandaddy enjoyed watching Brooke in her dance classes and recitals. All four of his grandchildren will tell you there is no better grandfather than their Grandaddy!
Gary was known for MANY things in his life. He could often be seen riding one of his Harley Davidson Motorcycles. Gary was known to many as "The Harley Man" or "Harley Dude." Besides actually having two HD motorcycles he had a Harley Davidson motor cycle trailer that he also converted into a travel trailer. He and Judy would travel together with their family and friends and were often seen camping in the infield at NASCAR races and Longhorn Tailgating Parties. Gary was always planning some type of trip for them and their friends to go on. One of his favorite destinations was Garner State Park in June. He spent many summers there with his family and friends and his family promises to carry this tradition on and will be there every June together. His famed Dune Buggy will continue to zip around the park. Gary also enjoyed worshiping the Lord with his "Bible Study Group" from Shoreline Christian Center.
Gary was given the best possible care these past five months at MD Anderson. The family would like to thank all of Gary's nurses and doctors. A special thanks to, Dr. Eric Jonasch and friend and neighbor Dr. Rob Dickinson and Asera Care Hospice staff and his nurse Jessica. Gary was determined to fight cancer to the end and he did so in hero fashion. Dr. Jonasch told Gary that he was one of the bravest patients he had ever seen. His family and friends are so proud of his courageous fight! TEAM GARY will forever be strong! GO TEAM GARY!
