Greg and I were childhood friends. Remember fondly, Greg's love of botany. 

When I learned about Greg's deteriorating condition, I immediately made plane reservations from Chicago that weekend.  Fortunately Greg was awake and coherent on the first day I was there, and even better and more talkative on the second day.

We  shared stories and memories and talked about his visits with  many of the family members throughout the years.  As most of you know. Greg loved snakes.  He frequently drove to Kentucky and stayed with my brother Dave and his wife, where he would go snake hunting in the creeks and rivers.  We also reminisced about the family weddings that Greg, usually accompanied by his dad, attended; talked about memories of swimming in the lake at their home in Michigan when we were young, and the bike ride he took with us and my son Andrew, when he came to Chicago. He also loved the visits with Kristin, Fran, Andrew and the kids.  He got this big smile whenever he saw Jimmy, Margo and Jacky and when they  played board games at Kristin's house.  He remembered the visits that most of my 5 siblings (his cousins) and I made when their family lived in Austin.   

Greg knew how to love.   It was clear how much he loved his friends and family.  After his mother's death, he was looked out after by his neighbors, Dave and Karla; he was cared for by Mary, who tended to him 24/7 during his last days, made him smile, even in his pain, and treated him.  He expressed his love for me and my family.  He felt and expressed love in spite of life's difficulties. 

You will be missed, dear Greg.

Memories with my cousin.
When I heard the news of Greg’s passing, I was deeply saddened. Greg was always an interesting person who liked to talk about international politics, stocks and his love for his snakes.  When Greg would visit my brother, Dave and family in Kentucky every year, that’s what he loved to do, hunt snakes. He would be quite animated and knowledgeable when he would visit with us in Cincinnati telling us about his adventures.
When we were little, living in Kalamazoo, Michigan, we would visit with Betty, Hank and Greg in Bloomfield Hills. We would spend the day with them, swimming together in their lake behind their house. 
Later on, we enjoyed seeing Greg with his parents at some of our family’s weddings. He  would be having a great time dancing and just enjoying himself..
A couple of years ago when  Bob and I were in Austin,  we had an opportunity to visit with Betty and Greg, and we had a wonderful time reminiscing about my mom, Hank’s sister, and my dad and their adventures together. Greg was very happy sitting with us and just talking together about family.  He was very gracious getting us water and anything else we wanted. He was so happy. 
I think what I’ll remember most is Greg’s sense of humor and his smiling face. When I last saw Greg in December and we hugged goodbye, I didn’t know that was the last time I would see him. I will miss you, our dear cousin. May you rest in peace.

A tribute to my dear Cousin Greg:  

First off, thank you Greg for teaching me as a young child to appreciate and respect snakes.😊    Over the years it has been a valuable lesson to learn not to panic on hikes, bike rides, and instances where a snake goes slithering by.  I have fun memories of you at an early age visiting our home in Ohio where you would be overturning rocks down at the creek near our house just to see the variety of snakes and critters that would come crawling out.  But other than your love for reptiles, I admired your desire to always work on furthering your education, in your known field of study, but also in your endless pursuits of advancement in many fields of interest.

During the years that Doug and I lived in Michigan, we had many fun visits with you and your mom and dad in Bloomfield Hills.  Your family were gracious hosts, and sometimes we would all swim in the lake next to your house.  Those were some of my favorite times with you!  As a Chrysler employee, Doug also enjoyed conversations with your Dad (who worked for Ford) about the auto industry. 

Beyond all that, though, visiting with you over the years was special because it felt like being home.  Your resemblance and mannerisms to my beloved Mom, her dear brother Hank (your dad), and our Grandma Minnie Setz was so familiar that it brought special memories of earlier times together. Continued from above... We will miss your sweet nature, your wit, and conversations and sharing of your passions in life.  Visiting with you during the summer of 2018 will always stay in my memory as being very special.  It was the last time I would see you in this lifetime.  My husband and I, with our two daughters and four grandchildren all jumped out of a minivan in your driveway.  You were smiling and shook hands with our kids and the grandkids learning each of their names.  Your love of children and kindness to them really shone through and they (even quite young) responded in kind.  This was even while you were experiencing great bodily pains and inner turmoil.  At the end of that day which became the end of a lifetime of visits, you talked about your desire to visit us in Colorado.  You requested us to draw a map to our home with all of our phone numbers.  I wish you could have come dear cousin.  Until we see you in the next spiritual realm, your soul will be in our prayers.  - Ginny

 Greg, while most people only knew you for the afflictions you endured, I also came to know a kind, caring, appreciative, and humorous friend.     It takes a very strong person to endure  what you did yet maintain these traits. Your pain is now gone and Heaven awaits. God bless the Setz family.

There were very few people you trusted and even fewer that really knew you. The gentle soul that I came to care deeply for. 
Your quirky little smile will stay with me for my lifetime. You taught me too many lessons learned for these few paragraphs...the most important life lesson I learned from you was to be grateful for my family and realize how truly blessed I am. 
You deserved so much more appreciation than you received...its what you longed for most...companionship, appreciation, friendship.
I know your soul is at peace now my friend so until we meet again...

Fond memories of Greg attending weddings and various family events with Uncle Henry and Aunt Betty.  It's a comfort to know that he is once again with his loving parents.
No More pain. No more suffering ... only an everlasting peace and love beyond our imagination.

Our family would like to share our love and condolences for Gregory Setz. He was a great person and loved his family and friends. He will be greatly missed but we are thankful that he will be reunited with his father and mother in heaven. Thankfully his bodily pain has ceased and passed. He is now enjoying eternal life with God the Father in Heaven! Amen.
