Hal Chase passed away suddenly on January 27, 2026 at his home in Austin, Texas. He was born in Brady, Texas to Hal, Sr. and June Chase. He loved growing up in Brady and had many fond memories, in particular his school days and playing high school football for the Brady Bulldogs.
Hal was an avid sports enthusiast. He loved his Texas Longhorns and often said he bled orange. He followed the Dallas Cowboys regardless of how they were doing. In addition, he was a fan of the Houston Texans, the Texas Rangers and the Houston Astros. Long before Google was around, friends and family would call Hal for scores, stats and sports history trusting him as their go-to source, Other sports he enjoyed were the horse races and rodeos and for a time went to many of the races held in the Central Texas area.
After graduating from high school, Hal attended San Angelo State College before joining the Navy and serving for 5 years. He was proud of his time in the Navy and loved telling stories of his escapades, particularly his service aboard 4 submarines and his work as a Russian linguist. He often joked about what he might do after leaving the Navy with his Russian language skills, once suggesting he could become the Czar of Texas.
Hal was a very good drummer. In fact, he would say his claim-to-fame was playing the drums for Willie Nelson in the early 1960’s as Willie was coming thru Brady on the Louisiana Hayride and needed a drummer. Hearing Willie’s need for a drummer, locals contacted Hal and he gladly stepped up to the plate. He said very few people were at the event, but a good time was had by all.
Hal spent his career in sales, a natural fit for his friendly personality. He never met a stranger and was once told he had the gift of gab as he was always ready with a story or joke. Friends and family would agree, Hal was truly never at a loss for words.
Hal had many nieces and nephews and proudly embraced his role as the “funcIe.” He cherished time visiting with them sharing laughs and keeping the mood light with his stories, humor and sports knowledge.
In addition to his parents, Hal was preceded in death by his step-father, Bob Wilson and brother Mark Wilson. He is survived by his loving wife, Laverne of 44 years, brothers Greg (Ima), Richard (Sara) and sister Beth (Jimmy) and many nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Hal's Life will be held at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Funeral Home, 14501 N. Interstate 35, Pflugerville, Texas 78660, on April 25, 2026, beginning at 1:00 pm.
