Paul Helms, age 68, passed away suddenly on November 5, 2014. Paul was born on January 10, 1946 in Temple, Texas. At age 3, he and his family moved to Austin, where he lived for the rest of his life. Paul was preceded in death by his father, Homer Helms, and his mother Velda Bettye Joiner. Paul is survived by his step-father, R.H. “Booter” Joiner of Austin; his half-sister, Phyllis Sammon and husband Al of Round Rock; and his niece, Nicole Sammon of Pflugerville.
Paul was a graduate from McCallum High School. Paul followed his step-father’s footsteps and pursued a career in the construction industry, primarily in painting and drywall work. He had a very successful career with the University of Texas where he retired from their Physical Plant Maintenance Department in 2009.
Paul loved the challenge of working crossword puzzles, had a passion for reading and never tired of watching professional football and baseball games on television. Paul was an accomplished artist and during his early years his talent was acknowledged when his charcoal drawings were displayed at Laguna Gloria Museum. For a number of years, Paul resided with his step-father and had assumed many of the day-to-day activities required to run a household. He did all the shopping, cooking, yard work and loved antagonizing the household canine, “Missy”. He loved playing dominoes and attending UT baseball games with family. Paul will be greatly missed by his family and friends; Missy is still looking for him and does not understand why he is not in “his” chair.
Paul will be remembered at graveside services on Tuesday, November 11, 2014 at 1:00 a.m.
at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Funeral Home in Pflugerville, Texas.
