A PORTRAIT OF A LIFE WELL LIVED
The world welcomed James Edward Moore on May 8, 1943, in Temple, Texas, to his wonderful parents, Roxie Mae and Clyde Edward Moore. He was the oldest and only son among six children.
Childhood
James was christened as an infant at St. James Methodist Church and grew up surrounded by the love of his parents, grandparents and a closeknit community of extended family and friends. He attended Crestview and Wheatley Elementary Schools and Dunbar Junior Senior High School.
As a child, James enjoyed sports and outdoor activities. He particularly liked playing little league baseball and participating in Boy Scout events. He had an active childhood with his attentive parents and grandparents, filled with family life, church, sports, and school activities. His love for baseball began at the young age of seven, when he served as batboy for the local men’s baseball team. James later became an accomplished player, following in the footsteps of his father, grandfather and numerous uncles and cousins. Much of his childhood was spent playing with his brother-cousin, Jim, who was like a brother to him, as well as his five younger sisters. The family shared joyful times alongside the typical big brother teasing moments. James was involved with sports and the school band, where he played the drums. He was very athletic, played football and was an athletic trainer for various sports. James graduated from Dunbar Junior Senior High School in 1961 and later was elected president of the Class of 1961 Fiftieth Anniversary Committee.
College Life
James attended Huston-Tillotson College, from 1961 to 1965 earning a degree in Physical Education. He fully embraced college life, joining Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., student council and eventually becoming the president of his senior class. James met the love of his life, his college sweetheart, Emma Manning, and credits her for his spending more time studying while they were dating.
Family and Personal Life
James and Emma married on July 3, 1964, and three sons were born to this union, Sean Keith, Christopher James and Parrish Kane. They were married fifty-four years. Their sons were loved, nurtured and guided in the church to ensure that they would become successful adults. James and family were affiliated with St. Stevens Church, and he later joined Wesley United Methodist Church in Austin, Texas. The family traveled throughout the United States, supporting their sons playing AAU sports, as well as traveling on Carnival cruises to Alaska and other locations. James was a people person. He was known for his love of spending time with family and friends. He enjoyed “guy time” with his friends, watching and attending sports events, and dining at favorite barbecue and seafood spots, visiting relatives and friends and “catching up” with high school classmates during their lunch gatherings. A fashion-forward individual, James always took great pride in looking his best for any occasion.
James and Emma had many things in common. They were a fantastic host and hostess and often had family and friends over for holiday dinners and events. They had a talent for restoring almost anything and decorating. They loved their seven grandchildren and one great grandchild and spent quality time with them.
Professional Journey
After college, James embarked on a successful career journey, beginning with Job Corps in Grants, New Mexico. He then joined IBM where he worked in various locations, including New Bedford, Massachusetts; Miami, Florida; Austin, Texas; and frequent assignments in White Plains, New York. James built a successful career in sales, achieving numerous awards and accolades, including the coveted “Salesman of the Year” honor multiple times. After retiring early from IBM, James pursued his entrepreneurial interests, starting his own LLC, and working part time in the antique, men’s apparel and insurance businesses.
After several years of declining health, James moved into a dependent living residence. He received loving, great care, and consistent and frequent visits from his family and friends, who took him gifts, his favorite foods, snacks and drinks. He received great care from the staff at Bristol Hospice in Pflugerville. James transitioned peacefully on a Sunday, January 26th, 2025. He had spent Saturday night doing one of his favorite past times, watching sports.
