Jeane Marie Carr (Jeane Mecom Carr) of Austin, Texas passed away on Sunday, February 9, 2025, at the age of 82. She was born on September 12, 1942, in Austin, Texas. As a child Jeane traveled with family to different parts of the US, but always returned to, and made her home in or near the Austin area. She was a Native Austinite through-and-through.
Jeane graduated from Central Texas Beauty College circa 1963, to engage in her career as a cosmetologist, or “hairdresser” in that era’s vernacular. She later attended Baldwin Beauty College in the early eighties to achieve her Cosmetology instructor's license. Jeane was also in the pioneer group of licensed electrologists. Throughout her professional career she owned and operated Violet Crown Beauty Shop, Jeannie’s Styling Salon, and Electrolysis by Jeannie. Her favorite customers were her children, grandchildren, siblings, nieces and nephews, who had their hair and nails done for free. Jeane also volunteered her services throughout her life for those in need.
When her health allowed, Jeane was actively involved in church activities. As a child she attended West Austin Baptist Church, and as an adult she attended Skyview Baptist Church, and Allandale (Great Hills) Baptist Church. She was a constant in her family’s lives; her children and grandchildren, brothers, sisters, cousins, nieces, and nephews were never surprised by a visit or a phone call to catch-up or just see how they were doing. There too, was participation in all the local annual events such as Austin Aqua Festival (Austin was better then) summertime swims at Northwest Pool, or picnics at Zilker. One of her favorite activities was to load up the car with family and go “riding around,” to unwind, relax, and enjoy the day.
Jeane was preceded in death by her husband Bobby J. Carr, Father Elisha Hart Mecom, Mother Alice Lorena Mecom, Sister Doris A. Disinger and husband James, Brothers, John L. Mecom and wife Eva, Wiley W. Mecom, Barney E. Mecom and wife Mary Lou, and Joe C. Mecom.
Jeane is survived by her sister Sarah Darlene Speer, sister-in-law Lousie Mecom, children Brad Carr (Jamie), Daniel Armstrong (Stacy), and grandchildren Riley, Chaleigh, Savannah, and Corey. Great-grandchildren Travis, Isabella, Stella, and Ella. Jeane is also survived by cousins, nieces, and nephews, all of which she loved dearly and would mention often.
As processing the passing of our mother, grandmother, sibling, aunt, and cousin has been extremely difficult over the weeks, her son Brad discovered a poem she had copied down and carried amongst her valuables. Literature contributes the authorship to Laura Ingalls Wilder, but for her children and grandchildren; we contribute it to our mama and our mamaw, continuing to guide us after leaving this earth…
“Remember me with smiles and laughter, for that is how I will remember you all, if you can only remember me with tears, then don’t remember me at all.”
That poem is but a small reflection of how selfless, and thoughtful, Jeane was throughout her life. She never met a stranger, and in spite of all of the hardships she endured throughout life, she always tried to make others live a little better, a little more comfortable, and a little more at peace.
A private service will be held for the immediate family, arrangements are pending.
