I've known John for many years but did not get the opportunity to work with him until 2000.  As I look back on my relationship with John, two things stand out as defining who he was.  

As a professional, I have always admired and respected those who were masters of their craft.  John was a master of his craft.  He taught me a lot about design and construction at AE.  I trusted and relied on his expertise.

The second characteristic I loved about John was his good nature.  When I came to work with him in 2000, I was coming into a new work group and was unsure how I would be accepted.  Once John saw me, he gave me his friendship and I was immediately in the group.  If John liked you, he would give you fun pokes and I got a lot of them.  At the dance halls John always had a table and everyone was always welcome at his table.  So if you were alone, maybe having a bad day or week, you knew that John would be waiting to have a beer, laugh, dance and bring your spirits up.  

I will miss John and his antics, but when I get down, I will be able to close my eyes and recall his friendship and know I was blessed that he included me in his life.  Thanks John 

John was loved by all. Always happy. We would dance all night at Silver Dollar and go eat at Jims Cafe, at Christmas he would bring me a deep fried turkey, when he worked for the City of Austin. Thank you for all the good times. We will see each other again someday and dance again.

John was a good man everyone loved him,, always happy. We would go dancing at the Silver Dollar and dance all night then go eat breakfast at Jims cafe.  At Christmas when working for the City of Austin he and a few other guys would deep fry turkeys and bring me one, always thoughtful.  John you are loved and will be missed, rest my friend we will all see each other again someday.

Had the same passion for fishing.  Enjoyed sharing fishing stories.

I remember how much fun I had after meeting big John at Graham's. He was always smiling  and happy and ready to share his table with anyone who wanted to hang out, have a drink and just have a great time!! I even got him on the dance floor a few times :) I'm not saying he was a flirt, but the waitresses loved him.. Rest in peace John, you were loved.

I'll never forget someone who gave me so much to remember - especially all the laughs.  You will be dearly missed!!

I'll never forget Friday night pitching lessons. He always had drinks in the cooler for us. I'll never forget my dad and John coaching together. He was one of a kind. Love you Holly and family!

Graveside Service

John was preceded in death by his mother, Nancy Giles.  

He is survived by his two sons, Cody Giles and Chris (Amy) Garrett and their children Mason and Travis; his daughter, Holly Roberson and husband Blake and two grandchildren Colt and Coy Roberson.
