

Joyce Thomas passed peacefully from this life on June 18, 2014 at her home in Austin, Texas. She was the daughter of Willie Lee Thomas, Sr. and Florence Montgomery Thomas. Joyce was born in Lubbock, Texas on May 20, 1955, whom she shared her birth date with her twin brother, Howard Thomas and her first grandchild, Talesha Hunter.
Joyce's life was full and beautiful- grounded in a strong faith in God of all goodness and glory. She accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior which she was baptized at Hunter Army Airfield Chapel, in Savannah, Ga.
Joyce was a devoted mother and nana whose greatest pleasure was spending time with her family. She was known for her ease in frequent conversation with even total strangers, some may be surprised to learn of the extreme shyness of her youth. Her signature gift of joy, shown through her constant generosity, smiling, laughter, and humor, will never be forgotten. She enjoyed many interests, dancing, drawing, music, and traveling. She lived in various areas throughout Texas and other states, Dallas, Temple, Killeen, El Paso, North Carolina, Georgia, and Virginia. She worked as certified nursing assistant and known for her kind heart and compassion for others. She was previously employed at Southern Regional Hospital in Riverdale, GA, University Village Assisted Living in Round Rock, Tx, Grace House of Lake Travis, Austin State School, and Visiting Angels in Austin, Tx. Joyce also worked as a federal civil servant; supervisor housekeeper at Fort Story Naval Base in Virginia Beach, Va, and banquet facilitator at Fort Hood Officers Club in Killeen, Tx.
Joyce was previously married to Roger Lee Toxey, Sr. in October 1977 and to this union two children were born: Roger L Toxey, Jr. and Roddrick Toxey. She became an army spouse traveling various military installations. She became intertwined with the Toxey family thereby, creating an extended and lasting family. The Toxey's family welcomed her and her four children. And she was known to them as “Sue Sue”.
Joyce was preceded in death by her parents; Willie Lee and Florence Thomas, and her brothers, JE Thomas and Joe Albert Thomas. In her departure she leaves to cherish her fond memories, her six children, thirteen grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Daughters; Janetta Thomas of Pflugerville, Texas, and Felicia (Warren) Jackson of Roanoke, Texas. Sons; Larry Leshawn (Selena) Thomas and Larry Deshawn (Riquitta) Thomas of Killeen, Texas, Roger L. (Karla) Toxey of San Antonio, and Roddrick Toxey of Austin, Texas. Siblings; Daisy Voice- Perkins of Pflugerville, Texas, Willie Lee Thomas, Jr. of Brownwood, Texas, Frances (Matthew) Thompson of Killeen, Texas, Chester (Shelia) Thomas of Muskogee, Oklahoma, Howard (Jean) Thomas of Temple, Texas, Roy Thomas of Killeen, Texas, Nancy Thomas-Cochran of Dallas, Texas, and Julias Thomas of Temple, Texas; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other family members and close friends.
