Lilla Lee spent much of her youth between 1925 and 1939 in Central Texas. After marrying Oran Lee Hendricks in Lubbock, Texas in 1947, the young military family was stationed at Maxwell Air Force Base (AFB), Alabama; Brooks AFB, Kelly AFB, and Sheppard AFB, Texas; Landsburg AFB, Germany; Elmendorf AFB, Alaska; and Hamilton AFB, California. While Oran spent a final tour overseas at Osan AFB, Korea in 1966, Lee began her long term stay in Austin.
Lee and Oran met while she was working as an accountant with Montgomery Ward. The Air Force transferred them to Germany in 1954 where they adopted twins Steven Douglas and Susan Dolores. Lee then began working at what she considered her most important job, housewife. Lee was deeply committed to the Woodlawn Baptist Church in Austin and regularly attended services until health problems intervened.
Lilla Lee was preceded in death by husband of 57 years Oran who died February 5th, 2005 in Austin and daughter Susan Dolores Hendricks Fillman who died September 15th, 2009 in Austin. Lee is survived by son Steven and wife Rebecca Anne DeWitt of San Antonio, Texas; granddaughter Jennifer Lee Bailey and Shaun Anthony Kotko and three great-grandchildren: Braedon Conner, Mekenzie Lynn, and Wyatt Ray all of Houston, Texas; and grandson Brian Taylor Bailey of Austin. Lee was the fourth of eight children and survived by two sisters. They are Barbara Helen Strange Spurlin of Temple, Texas and Billie Dawn Strange Gilleland of Belton, Texas.
