Maxie Lewis Sanders, born February 11, 1925 in Reynolds Station, KY, passed peacefully on March 16 at his home in Round Rock, TX. The family is forever grateful for such a wonderful staff at the Waterford who assisted him and loved on him for many months, and for EnHabit Hospice for providing comfort and care during his last week.
Maxie is survived by a sister Birda Ray Martin, and daughters Debra Lukes and Cathy Fehlis (husband Kerry Fehlis). He was “Granddaddy” to five and “Greatdaddy” to even more.
After serving with the Army in Europe during WW II, Maxie returned to marry his beloved Annie Catherine Brooks. He also welcomed her mother Annie Thomas Bell Brooks to live with them until her death late in life.
Several years after losing Catherine, Maxie married Doris Webb from Eastern Kentucky. Some time after her sudden death, and following his move to Texas, he married his high school sweetheart, Jane Flint. They truly enjoyed their life together for about two decades until her death in 2021.
In Kentucky, Maxie worked for 40 years managing the meat department at A&P, and partnered in real estate for years with his dearest friend Don Matherly. A dedicated man of God, he served faithfully in his local church as a deacon and treasurer, taught Sunday School for 10 year old boys, and sang tenor in the choir.
Always, Maxie had a special place in his heart for his native Kentucky. He enjoyed basketball, helping out as a handy man, and playing cards with family and friends. He lovingly tended his garden well into his 90s, including growing an abundance of hot peppers (that he wouldn’t eat) for his Texan relatives.
Although we rejoice that he has finally joined a long-awaited homecoming, his gentle countenance and loving nature will be missed, but remembered, by many.
