Melvin was the second son born to Antone and Clemmie Smith. He was born in Frederick, Oklahoma on December 5, 1935. He grew up in the Coupland and Taylor, Texas area. He attended Coupland Wagner and O.L. Price High School.
Lakeview Baptist Church was the family church where everyone attended every Sunday. Melvin was Baptized under the leadership of the Late Rev. Mackey. Later Melvin moved to Austin, Texas where he worked various jobs. The year of 1968, he gained employment with the University of Texas, after many years of service and many awards he was able to retire on January 31, 1998.
Melvin lived a full and rich life, although not having any children of his own, he loved his nieces and nephews and he loved family gatherings. He loved to celebrate each of his Sisters and Brothers birthdays; he would say my treat. He was a generous man and he never said No. Melvin loved to play dominoes with his brother Curtis and his retired buddies Riley and Betty. He loved football and basketball and his favorite teams were the Dallas Cowboys and the Washington Redskins, and of course UT.
We believe he collected caps with UT symbols for every year he worked. Melvin enjoyed the finer things in life: Fine Foods, Clothes and a good game of dominoes. He will truly be missed.
Waiting to Welcome him in his Eternal home is his Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, his parents Antone and Clemmie Smith, his Brothers Edward Lee, Willie, Melford, Antone Jr., Cecil and Curtis Smith. He leaves to cherish his three sisters, Etta Henigan, Margie Green (Late Lee Arthur Green) and Nell Green (Louis Green), also a Niece close to his heart, Angela Latrice Green. He also leaves to cherish his memories with many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
We, the family of Melvin Smith, extend sincere appreciation for all acts of condolence shown during our time of bereavement. Your many kind deeds and expressions of sympathy, love and concern have been a source of strength and comfort, which will be with us as we accept God's will. May God continue to bless each of you.
