Michael Lewis King, of Pflugerville, Texas, passed away on June 16, 2025, after suffering medical complications stemming from ongoing health issues. Born on March 23, 1972, Michael was 53 years old at the time of his death. His life was one of dedication, service, love, and sly humor. His memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew him.
Michael is survived by his loving parents, Lesli and Sam King; his four devoted daughters, Shelby, Raegan, Samantha, and Kylie King; his sister Kasey and brother-in-law Jed Kennis; his sister Karey and brother-in-law Cody Smith; and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins, all of whom will miss him dearly.
Michael was a true Texan at heart, with a love for all things related to UT Football, Southwest Texas State University, George Strait, Metallica, and, of course, Star Wars. But above all, his greatest love was for his four daughters. As a father, Michael was unwaveringly devoted. His primary focus throughout his life was ensuring that his girls had everything they needed, both during his life and beyond. He worked tirelessly to provide for them and to ensure they were cared for, and he found immense pride in seeing them grow.
Michael was one of the most compassionate people you could ever meet—he never turned his back on anyone. He had a special gift for connecting with children and those with special needs, always showing patience and kindness. It didn’t matter whether you were family, a friend, or a coworker, he was there to help.
Michael had a dry, sarcastic sense of humor—he loved teasing his nieces and nephews, leaving them guessing whether he was serious or just playing around. He liked to stir the pot for the sake of a laugh. He was a subtle instigator of humor with a knack for making people smile and will be missed by all who knew him.
Michael was a dedicated and passionate public servant who devoted much of his life to law enforcement. He proudly served with the Austin Police Department starting in 1999, but his journey in law enforcement began earlier, in 1995, with the Amarillo Police Department. It was with the Austin Police Department that Michael truly found his purpose serving as a Sergeant in the Mental Health Unit. In this capacity, he made a meaningful difference in the lives of those most vulnerable in the community, providing them with the care and attention they desperately needed. From a young age, Michael knew he wanted to serve in law enforcement. His teenage years were focused on preparing himself for this path, and he fulfilled that lifelong dream with unwavering dedication, pride, and a deep sense of duty.
Michael’s legacy will live on in the lives he touched. His devotion to his family, his passion for public service, and his genuine care for others are qualities that will never be forgotten.
A service celebrating Michael's life will be held at Great Hills Baptist Church on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, at 11 am. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Austin Police Benevolent Foundation at apbfoundation.org in his memory.
Though Michael’s time with us was far too short, his love, kindness, and commitment to others will continue to inspire everyone who knew him. He will always be remembered as a dedicated father, a loving brother and son, a friend, and a selfless servant to his community.
Rest in peace, Michael. You are deeply loved, and you will never be forgotten.
