Madean was born on a farm in North Central Missouri, near Cainesville - almost on the Iowa border - on August 30, 1928 to Ernest Bittner Emmons and Ola Madie (Willis) Emmons. She passed in Round Rock, Texas on November 7, 2019 with her entire immediate family in her presence and holding her hands.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years Herman Leroy (Bud) Engle of Round Rock, TX.
Her original family all preceded her in death - her mother and father (Laredo, MO), brothers Ernest Bittner Emmons, Jr. (Junior) of Humphrey MO, Jesse Emmons of Detroit, MI, and Bob Emmons of Chillicothe, MO. Her sisters also all preceded her - Zora Moran of Kansas City, MO, Zoe Schmidt of Galt, MO, and Pernecia Grant of Erie, ND.
After graduating from high school, Madean embarked on her journey, travelling to Kansas City to be with her oldest sister Zora, where she began her career as a telegrapher and tele-typist with the Western Union Co. In September 1951, she met and married Herman Leroy (Bud) Engle of Chicago, IL and moved with him to Chicago where they had their first child in 1952, a son – LeRoy Ernest. Shortly thereafter Bud returned to the Army and the young family moved first to Fort Carson CO, then to Fort Riley, KS where, in 1955, their second child, a daughter, Sandra Lynn was born. After a tour in Germany and in Fort Benning GA, Madean settled her family in El Paso TX and worked as a Western Union night Manager in order to provide her children with Catholic School – Private Education.
She sacrificed in order to give – whether working night shift in order to provide private school for her children or skimping on her personal effects in order to have her children well dressed for school. She was a Cub Scout Den Mother and a Girl Scout Troop Leader. If, it is possible to sum up Madean’s life in a phrase, it has to be – family first.
She was a talented artist who loved to watercolor – especially birds and country scenery.
