Robert Dale Calkins

Robert Dale Calkins, 77, of Leander, Texas, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, July 14, 2023 He was born on January 24, 1946, in Buffalo, New York, to Lloyd and Josephine Calkins. In 1963 enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he served for three years, including a year in Korea. He returned home and in 1968 married Susan Walter, soon after welcomed their first child, Robert Todd Calkins.

Robert Dale Calkins pursued a career in aerospace engineering and worked as a power plant mechanic for Rockwell International, being a contractor for NASA, contributing to the success of the space shuttle program. In 1977, Robert and Susan adopted Pearl Sandra and Mary Elizabeth Calkins. In 1979, they moved from Lancaster, California, to Leander, Texas, building a convenience store named Calkins Country Store, which was a staple for the community for over 40 years. He is preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Josephine Calkins; his brothers, Sonny, James Calkins; his sisters-in-law, Jan Calkins and niece Linda Diane Calkins; his nephew, Jimmy Calkins ; and his grandson Michael Andrew Kelly.

Survived by his brother Ira Calkins, sister Joanne Birchfield her husband Walt Birchfield, son Todd Calkins his wife Jamie Calkins, Daughter Pearl Blitch her husband Edward Blitch, Daughter Mary Griffin her husband John Griffin. Grandchildren Cole, Carley, Caden, Sandy, James, Rebecca, Davien and Kyran.
