As a teenager Robert worked on many farms doing various jobs. In the late 1950s/early 1960s, Robert served in the United States Army as a Lineman laying down telephone wire in Germany. Robert also worked as a union carpenter for Carpenter’s Local 1266 during the 1970s and 1980s. Starting in the late 1980s until his retirement he drove a truck for Patterson Disposal which was owned by his nephew Troy Patterson.
Robert loved nature and the outdoors. His passion was working in his garden raising different kinds of fruits and vegetables. Often, he would give them away to people and loved it when they would make him dishes from them. He also enjoyed camping, fishing, driving his boat and water skiing. Robert enjoyed the companionship of many animals throughout his life, from dogs and cats to various farm animals. He loved to talk, tell stories and make people laugh. Robert found much pleasure in doing things for others. It wasn’t uncommon for Robert to be found helping family and friends with miscellaneous jobs around their houses and properties. Often, he was found mowing not only his own land but the properties of others just to be of assistance and keep busy. He also managed the affairs of his disabled sister Annie Bell for many years. Robert William Clayton was a kind, friendly and humorous person. A lovable jack of all trades, Robert will be greatly missed by his friends and family.
