

Robert Russell Schnell Hamblen of Round Rock, Texas, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 23, 2013. He was 96. There will be a grave side service on Wednesday, August 7 at 10:30 at the Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas.
Robert was born August 4, 1916 in Indianapolis, Indiana to Markus and Mary Margaret Lemon Schell. He was adopted by Omer and Blanche Hoff Hamblen of Converse, Indiana in 1921. Growing up on a farm he was adept at fixing things.
He joined the Navy Reserves in 1942, serving on the minesweeper USS Steady in the Mediterranean. He was discharged from the Navy in 1945 to return to the family farm. In 1948 he joined the Army and was honorably discharged in 1952.
His civic responsibilities included being a founding member of the Loyal Order of the Moose in Shreveport, Louisiana, as well as a 32 degree Mason, and also a Noble of the Mystic Shrine of El Karvbsh Temple in Shreveport, Louisiana. Robert was also a life long Democrat. He was a member of the Church of Christ in Kingsland, Texas.
In his retirement, Robert managed Army Corps of Engineer campgrounds throughout the southwest. His dream was to own an Airstream Travel Trailer which he was finally able to do towards the end of his tenure with the Army Corps.
Robert was preceded in death by his wife Margaret Fisher Hall Mikeska-Hamblen. He is survived by his children John Hamblen of Leesburg, Florida; Joy Alford of Peachtree City, Georgia; Step daughter Myra Toliver Herzfeld of Round Rock, Texas; Niece Barbara Byford; Four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
