He spent his early years living in Nicaragua and South China. In 1971, through a mutual friend, he met his future wife, Lorena, and they married and moved to Nicaragua. They started a family and opened their first restaurant together in 1976, Restaurante Fortuna. However, they immigrated to the U.S. in 1979 due to the Nicaraguan Revolution and fled to Lubbock, Texas. They opened and operated another restaurant, Fortune Cookie, for 30 years and made many lifelong friends. They retired to Austin, Texas in 2020 to be near their daughters.
Roberto would work 6 days a week at the restaurant and on the 7th day, he’d mow the lawn and take care of family and home. He loved to create nicknames for people he loved (especially his nieces); he was incredibly kind; he grew up with a big family so he loved to have people around him; he loved to host parties and cook for everyone; he was a hard worker and generous to family, friends, and his restaurant family; he was goofy and happily participated in all kinds of shenanigans. He was well loved.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Lorena; his siblings Victor Quant of Lubbock, Miriam Cheung of Boston, and William Kwan of Austin; his three daughters Ivania Lee (Chiu) of Austin, Ismara Wassum (Christopher) of Ballston Lake, NY, and Ariana Quant of Austin; grandchildren Addison, Jasmine, Sabrina, and Isella; in addition to numerous nephews and nieces. He is preceded in death by his parents Augusto Sr. and Ana Quant, his siblings Augusto Quant of San Francisco, Carlos Quant of Lubbock, and Rosa Kwan of Lubbock.
A visitation for Roberto will be held Sunday, November 19, 2023 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Funeral Home, 14501 North Ih-35, Pflugerville, TX 78660. A graveside service at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Cemetery will follow the visitation.
