He was born on May 29, 1934, in Giddings, Texas, to Irma & Walter Schultz. Roger graduated from Giddings High School, where he was proud to have been a member of the 1951 Class 1A state championship football team. After graduation, he attended the Nixon-Clay Business College in Austin, Texas. He followed that by a long career in the building-supply field, working for companies such as Stripling-Blake Lumber Company and Buell Supply Company.
He married LeRayne Martha Laake on August 24, 1957, at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Houston, Texas.
He was a life-long member of the Lutheran Church and was a member of Martin Luther Lutheran Church in Giddings, Texas, at the time of his passing. He lived a simple, basic life and was never one for extravagance. Yet he was always willing to help others.
Roger never met a stranger and was well liked and respected by everyone he met. He had many, many stories and enjoyed sharing those with anyone who would listen. He had a great sense of humor, which also endeared him to people.
He always loved fishing and being outdoors, a trait which he passed along to his children through many family fishing and camping trips, as well as family vacations to places like Pike's Peak, Yellowstone National Park, and the Grand Canyon. He loved animals and especially enjoyed feeding birds and deer in his back yard and studying and watching birds in nature. In later years, he perpetuated this hobby by teaching his granddaughter to make bird calls while she was still a toddler.
Roger worked with cattle all his life, starting with he and his brother Charles helping out their grandfather, "Pops", and then helping his father. Throughout his life, he was involved in managing and caring for the herd on the family's property outside Giddings and referred to himself as the "barnyard surgeon" in his role working calves in springtime. Up until about three weeks before his passing, at 91, he was still moving the cattle from pasture to pasture.
He is pre-deceased by his wife of 66 years, LeRayne Laake Schultz, brother Charles Schultz and wife Francis, and son Robert Schultz. He is survived by son Kenneth (Jana) Schultz, daughter Laurie Schultz Reynolds, daughter-in-law Diana Schultz, sister Waldeen Schultz Hollingsworth, grandchildren Heather (Micah) Ansohn, Daniel Reynolds, and Nova (Brian) Bickers, great-grandchildren Evelyn LeRayne Ansohn, Dylan, Christopher, & Breanna Bickers, and a host of other family and friends.
Visitation with the family will be from 10-11 AM, Saturday, July 19, 2025, at Martin Luther Lutheran Church, 573 N. Main Street (Hwy. 77) in Giddings. Funeral services will be held immediately after at 11 AM at Martin Luther Lutheran Church with Pastor Blake Anderson officiating. He will be laid to rest at Cook-Walden Capital Parks Cemetery in Pflugerville at 4 PM Saturday afternoon.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you please consider making a memorial contribution in Roger’s honor to Martin Luther Lutheran Church in Giddings or Baylor Scott & White Hospital.
