Roy spent most of his early life in Rankin County, Mississippi, and shortly after graduating from High School he left home for Chicago, Illinois. It was during Roy’s time in Chicago when he chose to serve his country in the United States Air Force. He performed basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, TX. After basic training, Roy was stationed in Lincoln, Nebraska. When reminiscing about his time spent in Lincoln, he would speak to how cold it was during the winter. After Roy’s honorable discharge from the United States Air Force, he returned to Texas to be closer to his sister (Doretha Sly) in Austin, Texas. While in Austin, Roy was hired by the International Business Machine (IBM), married Irwanna Sharp, and had two sons (Justin B. Phillips and John Paul Phillips). Roy retired from IBM in the early 90s and spent his time traveling and performing lawn care to his yard.
Roy enjoyed attending Lady Longhorn sporting events in Basketball, Softball, and Volleyball. He also enjoyed passing the time with recording statistics for high school and collegiate sporting events. Roy also would plot the coordinates of hurricanes on a physical map during hurricane season. Most of all, Roy enjoyed being active and kept busy during retirement.
Roy was preceded in death by his parents Charlie Mae and Roy Phillips, sister Doretha Sly, and wife Irwanna S. Phillips. Roy is survived by his sons, Justin B. Phillips (and his wife LaTonya Phillips) and John Paul Phillips (and his partner Vishanti Persad), his grandchildren, Irwanna D. Phillips, Judah M. Phillips, and Joshua Phillips, nephews Barry Wash and Larry Wash.
Roy was a husband and father who will be truly missed.
