There were so many things Steve loved. He was a skilled mechanic and loved working on vehicles or pretty much anything that had an engine and some horsepower. His love for mechanics grew in his early teen years, while spending time with his Uncle “Big Boy” at his mechanic shop. He also shared his passion for mechanics with his nephew Cole who he loved as his own son.
His years as a Round Rock Dragon were spent as an All District Football player, participating in livestock shows and winning Grand Champion Steer at the 17th Annual Taylor Livestock Show. Steve learned his “excellent” driving skills from his father in the dark blue Chevy Impala at the age of 16 years. He loved hanging with his friends in the family’s pool, which was always a community favorite. Growing up in a large family of entrepreneurs with several businesses, Steve had jobs to do! He picked trash in the parking lot of the Dairy Kreme, mopped floors before school, dreaded peeling 100 lb. sacks of potatoes and often rewarded himself by opening the drive -in for his football team at midnight serving hamburgers and cokes.
The Summer of ‘77 was “Love at First Sight.” Steve and Dianne married Aug. 19th 1978. The early years of their marriage were spent fishing, hunting and dancing.
In raising his beloved girls, Steve always found a way to use his burnt orange convertible Cadillac with the “famous” longhorns in Community activities. Holly and Molly have fond memories of Saturday mornings out eating breakfast and fishing at the San Gabriel River in Georgetown. Steve had a love for animals and taught his daughters about FFA and bribed Molly (10 years old at the time), into showing a steer for a puppy she once wanted. He was so very proud of his girls and felt confident that David and Derik would take good care of them as they began raising their own families. The girls and Dianne have many memories of constantly stocking the tank at their home with fish, swinging on the rope and falling in the tank while mowing, which always made for great laughs.
After learning his first grandchild would be a boy, Steve immediately built a fort, jungle gym, and started planning for the hunting and fishing seasons. He was so proud to be a “Papaw” of 4 grandchildren and always had them near to his heart. Steve was their personal jungle gym and always created unique keepsakes.
Steve always looked forward to his weekly coffee talks with his “Wag-A-Bag” buddies, Tuesday night dominos with Juan, Cajun, Herbie, Stanley, Ward, George, Parker, Glen, Raymond, Dwayne and Phil Mitchell and telling stories with his life long friends.
While these are a few of the great memories we have of Steve, there are so many more that could be shared (and some that can’t) about someone we will always love and cherish.
