Verlene was born on October 28, 1931 in Round Rock, Texas to Henry and Betty Wolff. Verlene grew up in Round Rock, Texas where she attended Round Rock High school. On January 22, 1948 Verlene married the love of her life, Truman Schoen. Verlene and Truman had two daughters, Chris and Teresa whom they loved dearly.
Verlene was a loving wife, sister, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend to many. Verlene, known by many as NeNe, was so proud of her family and bragged on them any chance she could.
Verlene loved the Lord and was a member of Faith Lutheran Church of Austin for 67 years where she faithfully attended Sunday service and served her congregation in any way she was asked.
Verlene spent her career working for 33 years for Austin Independent School District before retiring on May 31, 1999. Once in retirement, Verlene was an avid gardener and loved her flowers. Being outside with dirty hands was her happy place. She loved to fish with a cane pole given the opportunity. She also loved to sew and embroider in her free time and was known to make enough kitchen towels throughout the year to give some to everyone as Christmas gifts.
She was preceded in death by her husband and parents. Verlene is survived by her brothers, Howard Wolff and Roy (Shirley) Wolff; daughters, Chris Guthrie and Teresa Wheatley; grandchildren, Kimberly (Rick) Turnage, Jennifer (Dan) Duncan, Brandon (Julie) Guthrie, Chad Wheatley and Amanda (Trey) Swor; great-grandchildren, Connor Turnage, Peyton Turnage, Arin Turnage, Scott Wheatley, Caden Wheatley, Vaughn Guthrie, Caleb Swor and Avery Swor. She is also survived by many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be at Faith Lutheran Church, 6600 Woodrow Avenue, Austin on Wednesday, June 19, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. and service following at 11:00 a.m. Graveside service will be at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Cemetery in Pflugerville, TX. The family requests that due to the warm temperatures, attendees wear business casual attire instead of suits.
Chris and Teresa want to give a special Thank You to all of the loving and caring staff at Brookdale Assisted Living and Memory Care in Round Rock, TX that took such wonderful care of our Mother.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association loving memory of Verlene.
