Virginia Warrington, of Austin, passed away peacefully May 18, 2021. She was born on September 11, 1927, in Mexia, Texas. She graduated from Gatesville High School and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Southwestern University, Georgetown, in 1947. While attending graduate school at the University of Texas Austin, she met Sam L. Warrington, a senior Civil Engineering student. They were married on December 19, 1948. After Sam’s assignments with the Texas State Health Department in several cities around the state, they permanently settled in Austin.
Virginia taught school at the Austin State School prior to relocating to the Rio Grande Valley with Sam. There she taught in the Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Independent School District’s special classroom for exceptional children.
Virginia was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and member of St. John’s United Methodist Church where she taught Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten Sunday school for many years and volunteered at the Friendship Center in Montopolis. She enjoyed traveling, sewing, watching beautiful sunsets over Lake Travis, but more importantly her true passion was UT Longhorn football and baseball games and the Dallas Cowboys. In her later years, she was always eager to take a trip to New York City with “the girls” to attend Broadway musicals and host “just girls” luncheons for birthday celebrations or just to socialize. Always cheerful and optimistic, Virginia cherished her time surrounded by her family. She will be dearly missed.
Preceded by her parents and husband, Virginia is survived by her children, Diana Yarbrough, and husband, Randy; Cynthia Birdwell, and husband, Wes; Sylvia Lewis, and husband, Jim; and Steve Warrington, and wife, Randi. Surviving grandchildren are Brian Parker, and wife, Grayce; Jason Birdwell, and wife, Micah; Jessica Birdwell-Stabeno, and husband, Jake; Samara Mendez, and husband, Tomas; Larisa Lang, and husband, PJ; and numerous great-grandchildren.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, the 26th of May 2021, at Cook-Walden Funeral Home, 6100 North Lamar Boulevard, Austin, Texas.
