The intelligent and kind hearted Wesley B. Wilkins Jr. was born on March 4, 1952 in Hearne, Texas to the proud parents of Wesley B. Wilkins Sr. and Louise Mitchell. Through this union he was the youngest of four children, and the only boy. He was affectionately known as “Bug” “Wesley” “Paw Paw” and “Uncle Bug”.
Wesley attended Blackshear High and later transferred to Hearne High School where he graduated with honors. During Wesley’s time in school at Hearne High, he discovered a true passion for sports, especially football, and participated on the high school football team. Wesley was studious with his studies, earning the status of Who’s Who of America and the National Honors Society. Wesley continued a model of excellence path to further his education, and was accepted and graduated from Huston—Tillotson University in Austin, Texas where he met his first wife Dorothy Spears- from this union his first child, Anthony Wilkins, was born.
After college, Wesley would try different professions, beginning with a career with the Austin Police Department (APD) as a Police Officer. During his career at APD, Wesley met his second wife Gertrude Edwards; during this union his second child, Marcus Wilkins, was born. Following Wesley’s tenure with APD, he embarked a long-term journey with Towne Air Freight, where he led and managed others until his retirement.
Wesley was a man of many interest. His joy in life came from his family and sports. Wesley was an avid football fan, rooting for his favorite teams: University of Texas and Dallas Cowboys. He enjoyed attending or participating in tailgating for these games with family, especially the University of Texas vs Oklahoma University and any Dallas Cowboy home game, but he also enjoyed simply watching on television on the edge of a recliner.
Wesley is survived by his three sisters Artis Wilkins of Cedar Park, Texas; Carolyn Anderson of Austin, Texas; and Robbie Wilkins of Pflugerville, Texas; his two sons Anthony Wilkins and Marcus Wilkins; his three grandchildren; and a host of step sisters and brothers and nieces and nephews.
