AVIS DE DÉCÈS
Alan Vincent Brunacini
18 avril , 1937 – 15 octobre , 2017
Chief (Ret.) Alan Vincent “Bruno” Brunacini, 80, passed away Sunday, Oct. 15, 2017, in his hometown of Phoenix, Ariz.
He was born on April 18, 1937, in Jamestown, New York. When he was about 5 years old, Bruno’s family relocated to Albuquerque, N.M., where he graduated from Highland High School. He moved to Phoenix as a young man, and in 1958, he joined the Phoenix Fire Department (PFD). One year later, he married his best friend and sweetheart, Rita.
He moved up the fire-department ranks, holding every sworn position. Along the way, he took note of what worked and what needed fixing. When he promoted to Fire Chief in 1978, Bruno sparked a much-needed revolution. A gentle-hearted philosopher with a keen wit and kind disposition, his leadership creed was sincere, smart and simple: Prevent harm. Survive. Be nice. Bruno’s primary focus was firefighter safety. Second only to that, he told his charges, take gentle care of our citizens. He was a dedicated advocate for “Mrs. Smith”—that’s the name he chose to represent any fire-department customer. Treat Mrs. Smith with respect, he said. Be kind, show compassion. Chief Bruno was nothing if not genuine, and he showed those he worked with the same gracious consideration he expected for the citizens of Phoenix.
Bruno’s humor and candor made him a favorite at fire-service conferences and symposiums. His sweet brand of leadership proved infectious, and other departments across the nation began adopting his customer-service philosophy. When his 1996 book, “Essentials of Fire Department Customer Service,” was featured in The Wall Street Journal, leaders and bosses from all industries heeded his straightforward advice. Bruno’s other books include “Command Safety,” “Timeless Tactical Truths,” “Anatomy and Physiology of Leadership,” and the renowned “Fire Command,” which many credit for improving how firefighters operate on the scene of hazardous events. Chief Bruno and his sons eventually used the principles of “Fire Command” to develop Blue Card, an innovative training and certification program that has trained 35,000 firefighters to date for the challenges faced at structure fires.
Bruno retired from the PFD in 2006 after 48 years of passionate service. The quintessential object in motion, Bruno continued lecturing, writing and teaching. He was a graduate of Oklahoma State University’s Fire Protection Technology program, and he had a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Public Administration from Arizona State University. Bruno was always learning. You would often see him scribbling notes on 3 x 5 cards he kept in his pocket. He had faith that anyone at anytime could have something clever to say, and he didn’t want to miss it.
Bruno is survived by his beautiful wife Rita; his sons Nick (wife Michele) and John (wife Holly); his daughter Candi (husband Ryan); his grandchildren Alex, Alana, Chelsea, Lauren, Olivia, Katie and Maria; and a loyal tribe of co-workers and friends. He lives on as the angel on our shoulders, reminding us to “Be Nice,” even when it’s difficult.
A celebration of Chief Bruno’s life and legacy will be held Saturday, Nov. 4, 1 p.m., at Comerica Theatre, 400 W. Washington St., Phoenix, Ariz. Dress is casual. In honor of the chief’s signature style, Hawaiian shirts are welcome. Those attending the service who wish to bring fire apparatus should contact Aaron Ernsberger at 602.501.9977.
I lieu of flowers the family asks you to make a donation in Bruno's name to the following charities.

The fire service has lost a giant. "America's Fire Chief." I first met Chief Brunacini at the FDIC in Cincinnati decades ago. His awesome personality made me follow his teachings at seminars and conferences from then on. In 1995 at the FDIC in Indianapolis I got him to stand still a moment for a photo with Chief Sherman Manchester of Kodak FD in Rochester, NY and I. His Incident Command book with many of his drawing was signed by him blessed with one of his sketches. His nine books, recordings, videos and teachings will live on forever in classrooms, firehouses and firefighter's hearts. He taught us how to be nice to "Mrs. Smith" and make our FD's more successful. His saying that Incident Command "makes things go right" is something fire chiefs live by in FD's everywhere. I had some great teachers in college, but Chief Brunacini made them look only average. Thanks for the training chief. Rest easy "Bruno."

Alan Brunacini...the face of the American Fire Service! A man among men, the best of the best, brilliant and yet a mind for keeping it common sense and simple. He lead one of the finest fire departments in the nation for 28 years and everyone who worked with Bruno and has since followed should be thankful for the foundation he laid. As I told him at the Firehouse World in San Diego when I walked into his class a little early and he asked me, "what are you doing here?"....."YOU CAN ALWAYS LEARN FROM THE MASTER!"
With your loss the glass is half full. RIP, your work on earth is done. May God Bless Rita and the entire Family. John Price (LACOFD Ret)

Today in the Fire Academy in Yuma, AZ, Chief Hank Green introduced us to a few videos of Mr. Brunacini. The lectures, speeches, conversations, guidance, inspiration, and sincere care that was illustrated in the short few videos we saw were simply amazing. I feel like we have missed a ton by joining the Fire Service so late and missing out on all the things he was a part of during his time here on earth. I say that with remorse, but very thankful for the deep impressions he left on everyone who knew him so they can pass this along to keep his name and wisdom alive and growing.
Whomever follows his footsteps will never be able to fill his shoes, but at least they have an amazing head start by having such an amazing person to set the path ahead of them.
Once Ive graduated Ill be sure to study all that Mr. Brunacini left behind.
Prayers are with him, his family and friends.

Reading the words written in this book and also recognizing a lot of the names from the past brought tears to my eyes. I started as a cadet while in High School in the early 80's . I guess you could say I grew up with all of these guys. I was one of the first female cadets. Although I took my career to the support services instead of in the field I was still "protected" by these amazing men who continued to mentor me and keep me in the family. In what has still been the most devastating loss of my life, I experienced what was known as to "always take care of family". Whether you were past or present "family members" you were never forgotten. I lost the first love of my life when Paramedic David Franks was killed in a traffic accident after leaving his shift as a C shifter at Station 27. I could not have made it without them and that included Bruno. Thanks for the memories and a chance to remember my past friends and family. It is something I have never forgotten. Love and prayers to you all - Sherry Bass..

He was a true fire service pioneer. He brought simple, and common-sense concepts to us in a humorous way. His impression will be felt with us indefinitely. I was fortunate enough to have heard him speak in person at least twice and learned from his Blue Card course. Hawaiian shirts will always be FD cool because of him. There are thousands or millions today who operate safely and more efficiently due to his direct influence. He will always be admired and revered for his care for "Mrs. Smith" and all of us.

Alan did so many things it's hard to list them. What I will always remember, however, is how nice he was to me and to everyone. He had the very rare ability to be both larger than life and just a normal guy.
God bless you for all you did for the fire service. You made us all better.

I met the Chief well over 20 years ago after going to college for fire science and always wanting to meet the man who wrote all of those books. At the suggestion of a friend of mine who worked for Phoenix F.D. who I was visiting at the time, I made a shot in the dark call to the Chief's office to see if he was in town and if I could get an appointment with him? He was in town and he could see me the next day. I was very nervous like I was meeting a famous person and I expected him to have this huge fancy office, but it was all just the opposite. The first thing I said how much of an honor it was to meet you Chief as he met me half way from the front office to his office and he says, " call me Bruno". His office was nothing special and I don't even remember if it had a window or not. I think I was originally scheduled to have a 20 min time with him, but we ended up talking for over an hour. Mostly about what I wanted to do with my career and what I thought about different things happening in the fire service and of course that I should take the test to get on with PFD. Very easy to talk to and a most encouraging and positive person. God Bless You and your family Bruno. Thank you for everything that you did for all of us.

Thank you Bruno for being you. For your casual leadership style, for taking the time on several occasions to sit and talk with me in your office. Thank you for believing in me and while sometimes when I thought that I just wanted a straight forward answer to a question, you knew what I needed was to have the question thrown back at me and work it through myself. You will definitely be missed.

A few years ago I had the honor of meeting Chief Brunacini. Like many others have shared here, he insisted I call him Bruno. I was just another student in class, but Bruno treated me like we were old friends. Your leadership style is one that is hard to come by.
Thank you Brunacini family for sharing such a special man. Well done Chief!

Thank you Chief Brunacini for sharing, teaching, and your humble servant leaderships style to name just a few things I am grateful you passed along to me. There is no question in my mind you helped me learn to become a better ff/officer, and person. Though we never meet I felt as if I knew you, and your son's because of Blue Card. My first year at OSU was Alan's second. Shortly into the semester we had the first meeting of our fraternal organization, the Fire Protection Society. Bruno was President of the Society, and presided over that meeting. I had met him previously, but had not gotten to know him well yet. I just remember coming away from that meeting thinking, "That guy has more natural leadership ability than anyone I have ever known."

I met Bruno in a little hot dog joint in DePere Wi. Chief Rubin arranged it for me to meet Bruno and listen to him speak, as I had been trying to get to one of his classes for a long time. a special spot was saved for me to sit next to Bruno and we ended up talking for at least an hour. He then said to me "you get it" we became friends that night and every time I saw him I always got a big hug. so glad I made it to one of his Hazard Zone Conference. Miss you forever my friend

Dear Family of Chief Alan Brunacini:
We are so sorry to learn the sad news of Chief Brunacini's passing. Bruno was a fantastic individual who will be greatly missed by everyone.
I had the privilege of knowing Chief Bruno for more than 50 years and we have been best friends ever since. He was a dear friend and confidant who was always willing to lend a helping hand. I have fond memories of us working together to teach Fire Department Management classes throughout the years.
When I asked him to help me with the Carl Holmes Executive Development Institute (EDI), Chief Bruno didn't hesitate and became an integral part of our training team.
Bruacini will always be recognized for his contributions to fire service industry and for his compassionate servant leadership. He is remembered for abolishing negativity, rebuilding trust and empowering underrepresented communities.
There is a great emptiness left by Chief Brunacini's passing, but I am certain that the strength and the love that you and your family share for each other and for Bruno will get you through this difficult time.
May the outpouring of love you have received since Chief Bruno's parting serve as a reminder to you and your family how much he was loved by all who knew him.
With deepest sympathy,
Carl

It was Chief Brunacini that made me chose and complete my fire degree thru CSU. The messages he spoke of in one of his sessions made me pursue my fire science degree even more. He has a legacy that I believe others will not match. He was a great fire chief and mentor. He will truly be missed. Thank you Chief Brunacini in your inspirational messages and advises in fire command and structure. Thank you.

I once signed up for a seminar at which Chief Brunacini was speaking. Someone in my department asked me what the topic was and I answered, "You know, I don't even know. I could listen to him sell insurance." I struggle to think of a single individual who has made such a profound impact on our beloved service. My deepest condolences to the Brunacini family. Thank you for sharing him with us. God speed Chief and thank you for your service.

I first met the Chief in 2000 at FDIC. About 900 in the morning, as a new training officer for a new department I stood in awe of the huge RCA Dome in Indianapolis. as I walked up the stairs to the entrance, I noticed out of the corner of my eye a shorter gentleman wearing glasses heading in the same direction. as we closed in on each other I looked over to see that it was "Chief Brunacini"....UNREAL!!! He greeted me and we talked as we walked into the show. He was as kind and friendly as anyone I had known. He didn't know he was a movie star! Just a great person. I wish I had known him better. Thank you for all you have shared with us Chief...Blessings to Rita and your whole family.

I had the pleasure of meeting the Chief in 1986 when he taught me and others Fire Command. He was a very influential person and I will never forget our initial meeting. Over the years, I had the opportunity of seeing and talking with him a various fire related venues. I am deeply saddened that we lost this "genius in our trade" and hope his teachings will continue to be passed on to future generations. He did so much for the fire service and we are extremely indebted to him and his family for allowing him to teach us. Thank you for all you did for us, I know I will never forget you and I am sure the rest of America's Fire Service will not ether. Rest in peace Sir. David R. Harris PA

I met Chief Bruno in 1990 at his Fire Command Symposium. I was a newly appointed Fire Captain with the San Jose Fire Department. Trying to learn the business. His presentation was impactful. Throughout my 34 year career I would attend as many of his symposiums as I could. I tried to model his dedication to Mrs. Smith. What was most amazing is he recalled my name and would greet me by such. The Chief met thousand's of people and he remembered my name. That was flattering. There will never be another Chief Bruno. A true genius.

Chief Brunacini's impact on the fire service cannot be overstated. His foresight and influence have touched virtually every aspect of our service, and have dramatically, and permanently, changed it for the better. More importantly, I'm certain that Chief Brunacini impacted every person who met him: his kindness, sense of humor, and humility were disarming. I'm grateful to have met him and thankful to be working in a profession that he helped build.

When I started with Phoenix Fire over 30 years ago, I remember meeting Bruno for the first time and him telling me to just call him Bruno. Such an exceptional nice man. We would call each other Paisano, which is friend in Italian. He was like a father figure at work instead of the Fire Chief. I will always remember his Hawaiian shirts and signing everything in green ink! He will be sorely missed.

Chief Brunacini was one of the most unforgettable persons I ever met. I served on the NFPA 1710 Technical Committee when he was chair. I was representing cities on the committee and did not have a strong understanding of the fire service. Chief Brunacini very patiently helped me learn about the fire service and even sent me several of his books that are still in my library. I am so sorry for your loss but am comforted knowing that he left a beautiful legacy and I am sure some wonderful memories.

I was attending FDIC a few years ago and was walking by the registration area and ran into Chief Brunacini. He asked me about a sign and what the meaning of LEAD retrieval was? I addressed him as Chief, and he stopped me and said, we are all firefighters here and to call he Al. I informed him that those are the machines that they scan your badge and send you information. He stated he always throws them out because he hates junk mail. I offered him some Peanut M&M's and he took some and moved on and said to have a great training. My coworker was watching this and was asking, do you know who that is? I was like, yes that is Al, Duh! Loved his humor and enjoyed many of his classes at FDIC. My sincere condolences to the Brunacini family and to the whole world of firefighters that he touched along the way. My first thought on his passing was a selfish one, I couldn't imagine the fire service without Chief Bruno in it. I had already been looking forward to seeing him at the upcoming fire conference in Nashville. It then dawned on me how his presence is felt and will continue to be felt for generations in the service that we both loved so much. Chief Bruno's fingerprints are all over the blueprints, text books, and road maps of the modern day fire service. I know he is embarrassed by all this fuss, but that is the Chief that we all loved and respected so much. Rest in Peace Sir, Mrs. Smith is left in good hands.

Few men can truly be called giants in their profession. Bruno was one of those men although he would downplay it in a minute! His love for the profession seeped into many, many areas of fire protection both public and private. My first training session with him in 1977 at Tulsa Fire academy was amazing. His commitment to firefighter safety through his leadership at NFPA was second to none. His restoration of that Phoenix fire engine speaks to his love of the fire service. And that only scratches the surface. This world is a much better place because of Alan Brunacini and God alone knows how many lives he saved and how much suffering he prevented. RIP Chief.

By far the single most influential man, right below my Dad.
Chief.... call me Bruno, was a mentor to most of the firefighters that I worked with during my career in Fire EMS He exuded sincerity, had the typical Firefighter humor ingrained in his talks, in his books and in his life. A firefighters-Firefighter. Mrs. Smith, his lovely wife Rita and his family will always be a part of the fire service for many more years. He is and always be the fire version of Gordon Graham who will let be on in my generation of the Fire servic. Upholding his values, and caring towards our customers' will honor him the most. As it will be our job to honor his memory With his simple motto becoming our mantra, Prevent Harm. Survive. Be Nice. Rest In Peace Brother, we will continue to stand the watch. Peace be with Rita and their wonderful families. The Fire Service will always miss you and your contributions. RIP.

I first met Chief Brunacini at a fire conference in Brandon, Manitoba in the late 80s or early 90s.
We chatted for 30 minutes or so with other fire fighters.
I met him again 20ish years later. I indicated we had met before years ago to which he said " Are you still in Brandon?"
Wow. I was impressed, not sure how he did that.
Great respect for the man and his works. He has made an impact.
Condolences to his family and his fire family.

I remember selling the Phoenix Fire Department their first Honor Guard Dress Uniforms. Chief Brunacini was adamantly against the idea of dress uniforms and when he finally capitulated, he did so with the understanding that these dress uniforms were to be called 'away' uniforms and he didn't need one because he wasn't going away. Never met Bruno on a personal basis but devoured his book on Incident Command and was fortunate enough to implement it at a 300 000sq ft warehouse fire using over 18 departments and 150 fire fighters and all went
home safe....proving to me and others that it does work....Bruno your wife and family must be very proud. Harold K.Harvey, Fire Chief (retired) Quebec.

In a lifetime of Public Service, I have never been given better advice for universal solutions to life dilemmas.
"Do the Right Thing"
"Be Nice"
While underplaying his amazing wisdom, he would pass on simple solutions to helping Mrs. Smith. While learning the complications of Fireground Command from this great man, the entire Fire Service took home this even greater message. I'd like to think that people around the world are being treated better because of this man's influence on all of us.
My condolences to his wonderful family. May great memories help each of you lighten the burden of his loss.

I had the distinct honor as a new Training Chief to attend an Officers Symposium held at the Cal-Neva Hotel in Lake Tahoe in November of 1992. I got to sit and converse with Bruno one on one several times during this event. I was taken by surprise that such a distinguished chief, known world wide, would come in and sit down in his Hawian shirt and jeans and hold a conversation just like "One of the guys" while relaying some fantastic information that would redefine "Customer Service" in the fire service. Over the following years I again had the opportunity to hear him at several Training Conferences and IAFC and Florida Fire Chiefs conferences.
The fire service has lost a visionary Chief that wasn't afraid to take the bull by the horns and redirect it in a new direction. I wish more of the people I worked with over the years had his attitude and diligence. I know that I would have enjoyed working for him.
My condolences to Bruno's family and the fire service. He will be missed, but NEVER FORGOTTEN. His work will continue to set the bar for a long time.
Rest In Peace Chief. You paved the way to the future, and now God has a new Commander to watch over those still here caring out a career of "Customer Service", and they thought they were just firefighters.

I was a new boot at FS1 doing my shift on the poop deck at about 2100 hrs. There were several people there, all BSing about something, a rather odd looking fellow was just listening in the corner. As a new recruite, I thought I better say hi to the shy man. I said I don't know you but my name is Greg. He said I know that Tope and how is your wife Pat and 2 kids doing. I was so embarrassed but he was the kind of guy who chould talk to Kings but be kind and understanding to the least of us. My Grandfather and Alan Brunacinei were my heroes and always will be. My husband was always talking about all the great things Chief Brunacini had accomplished and what an impressive man he was personally. I was very excited when I found out I was going to meet this amazing man. One night while attending a fire service awards program I was not happy having to sit by myself while my husband was emceeing the program and introducing people. While sitting there I didn't know why there was a very quiet man wearing a Hawaiian shirt at this formal dinner seated next to me. Then I heard Chief Brunacini's name called and that man in the Hawaiian shirt stood up. I couldn't believe it! He walked up to the stage, humbly took the award, said a few words, and cracked a joke (that I don't remember now) and everyone started laughing and I was laughing along with them. Then he quietly walked back to his seat. That was when I realized what my husband saw in him. Around a year later Chief Brunacini came to our town to present a program and I was asked to go along with them for yet another dinner. It was then that I was able to get to really know him and see what my husband saw in him. I am sending the Brunacini family this message to let them know their husband, father, and grandfather not only influenced firefighters, but impressed their wives and families too. It was a joy and pleasure to meet you and know you Chief Brunacini.

Bruno was an amazingly patient mentor. His sense of humor and ability to make you comfortable is legendary. He gave deeply of himself, his time and attention. He had a way of waking you up to possibilities you'd never considered. Bruno was so unassuming. Going to lunch with him could be incredibly enlightening, but always entertaining and fun. He was so much larger than life. Each opportunity to interact with Bruno was rewarding. He was the Man. Bruno rocked the fire service. His commitment to learning and making it fun is evidenced by his success. We will forever remain in his debt for his contributions to the fire service. Terry Shields (Phoenix Fire)

Everyone else said it. The phone would ring and all you would hear is, "Hi Glenn, it's Alan Brunacini" and you snapped to attention to listen. We were in the presence of a legend, and he had the patience of a saint. Alan knew how sharp he was, but he never made you know it. He truly loved people and was as nice to the gal serving him breakfast as he was to the mayor or senators. I'm not quite sure if most of the fire service truly understands what a loss we have suffered, but I know everyone that knew him is shattered. RIP Bruno....

Rest in Peace Chief Bruno,
You pinned my very first badge and taught me endless lessons about customer service, incident command, and being nice!
You were a trend setter, a renaissance man, a true fire chief who didn't stop sharing the beauty of his organization so all of us could hope and fight to do the same.

I had the opportunity to serve with Chief Bruno on several different national committees and groups over the years, most of which he chaired. I remember one particular comment he made at Wingspread V that has stuck with me since that time. We were having a discussion about the types of people that fire departments were trying to recruit as Firefighters, and he made the remark that, " As a system, we're recruiting for the Marine Corps and then when they come to work, they find out we really meant the Peace Corps". Lot of truth and wisdom in that comment and the many others that he made; Alan Brunacini will be greatly missed - thanks Chief.

His Timeless Tactical Truths taught me more than anything I learned in school. Particularly, "Just because you're talking doesn't mean you're communicating" Never met him personally, but he had a big influence on my career, and I'm sure many others.. I'd bet that would be the legacy he wanted.

I was the info service red shirt in 2002. I would go by his office twice a day peek my head in, and say hi Chief Brunacini. He used to tell me to call him Bruno, no freakin way, I was the newest of the new, the lowest of the low... One day after many of these interactions, he said that he would settle for me to call him Chief Bruno He told me that I was the most important member of the fire department because I was the newest. One day he asked me to come into his office and sit down. OK, this was a request from my chief. The head honcho! So I sat down, and he asked me to put my feet up on his desk.... once again, no freaking way! Was this guy trying to set me up? So he got up, shut his office store, and told me again to put my feet up on his desk this time he ordered me to do it. So I very timidly put my feet up on my chief's desk, and he said now doesn't that feel good? Lean back, enjoy it! What an experience! I'll never forget how he said hi to me by name every time he saw me in the halls of admin. He was so engaged, if you were on his department, you knew he cared!!!! I was so lucky to have had Bruno as my chief! I feel I've learned from the best! Not just tactically, but socially and emotionally! Thank you for everything! RIP Bruno!

Anytime I was around him he made me feel special. I would see him frequently the summer I volunteered down at Phoenix Fire Administration when I was a child and he always made time to speak with me. He would always make me laugh somehow especially when he spoke to me about my father, Dwayne Ketchens. I've referred to him as Grandfather Brunacini ever since I can remember and he smiled anytime he heard me call him that. My father has knocked my socks from telling me of all the ways this man has shaped the very foundation of firefighting and how brilliant he was. I was shocked and hurt when I heard from my parents that he had passed. I hold my memories of him close and I feel very honored that I knew him. My deepest condolences to his family.

I met Bruno at one of the first Redmond Symposiums. As I listened to him speak I became enthralled. I had never heard a Chief talk like that, admit mistakes, open up about tragedy, speak frankly about our short comings as an industry. I introduced myself and started a friendship and mentorship experience that I will never forget. I had the pleasure of breaking bread with him on numerous occasions and learned so much over meals that I always went home each time with new perspectives. I sat down in Cinncinnati with a friend Bruno, Francis Brannigan, and Tom Brennan. First, I never laughed so much in my life. Each of them were world class story tellers but each added to their story a lesson learned. I invited Bruno to speak at my department and met with him every time I got the chance. I called him on occasion to discuss my career and challenges. Not once did he ever say he was too busy to chat. I will miss this man deeply. He was one of a kind and shaped the fire service as no one individual has.

Sincere condolences to all the Brunacini family. Our heartfelt prayer is that God will grant peace & comfort to the Brunacini family as they grieve their loss.
I am proud to say that Alan V. Brunacini earned my respect, as he was my Fire Chief and friend. Thank you Bruno for your leadership; for your trust & confidence in each Department member; for your humility.
You encouraged each of us to experience our full potential. You trusted each of us to use our potential in serving the community and each other skillfully and with compassion.
Bruno, thanks for inviting each member to be a part of the Department to the degree they desired- you humbly gave credit to each member for their involvement in their delivering quality service to " Mrs. Smith" and her family. You instilled a servant attitude: to use our skills for the benefit of others and to do so with a compassionate heart. Bruno, you gave us permission to have "fun" as we gave of ourselves for the safety of the community we served.
Finally, Bruno, you taught us the grandeur of simplicity, and did so in NEW fire terminology such as:
Be nice; Be compassionate; Be considerate; Be safe; Take care of each other and Have fun!
May God continue showering His blessings on the Brunacini family. May you rest in peace my Chief.

Chief Bruno came as a guess motivational speaker to the five-year planning session at Santa Clara County FD. As a Dept. we had been struggling over the "shopping on duty" issue. Bruno's opening words told us how he used to be against the issue himself until he had received so much positive feed-back from the public about how they loved the interaction with the crews in the shops that he had completely changed his mind (much to the chagrin of our Chiefs). Bruno's best attribute in customer service was that he actually listened.

Of the stories I could share, my favorite is the one I share most every time I teach. A couple of years ago I attended a Safety Conference in which the Chief was the host speaker. As he was describing a scenario to the group, I quietly said to my co-worker next to me that he was describing "normalization of deviance". From 20 feet away, he stopped mid-sentence, turned to me, and asked what I had just said, then came over with the microphone and asked me to explain it to the group. He heard my whispered comment at 20 feet, after 40 years in the fire service. A teacher, a mentor, and a true leader in the fire service. Be nice, and keep your people safe. He has been an inspiration to many, and one of the reasons I continue to teach and pay forward what he and the fire service have given to me. May he and all his family be blessed.

Back in the day the Chief was the highlight speaker at conferences and one of those people who shaped our vision and careers as young company officers and training instructors. He possessed that rare combination of book learning and real "street smarts" along with a great ability to communicate. Occasionally in life you meet people whose "sound bites" resonate for the rest of your career. Chief Brunacini was one such person. His contribution to the fire service will live on. RIP, Chief.

Chief Brunacini's photo is on my first textbook, FIRE SERVICE LAW, taken in his office wearing his colorful Hawaiian shirt.
We first met in Cincinnati when we were both presenters at a Fire Chiefs conference. He sat in my morning program concerning Chiefs suffering from depression / PTSD - with several Chiefs sharing their recovery stories. Chief Brunacini in his afternoon presentation spoke about the amazing sharing he heard that morning. He kindly invited me to visit him in Phoenix, and that led to several visits - including tour of the Incident Command training center with the Chief and several ride-alongs, including with his sons. Photos of the tour also went in the textbook.
I particularly remember our discussions about his innovative and bold decision to remove SCBAs from interior of apparatus. I have shared this insight with students in my Fire Safety course.
He is my HERO! .

Chief Bruno, I am grateful for your impact on the Fire Service and upon me personally and professionally. When I first met you I was a young fire instructor and you honored me by calling me and letting me know that an article I wrote for ISFSI impressed you and that you copied it and distributed to all the Phoenix FD company officers. I was so honored. Later when I dealt with a significant crisis in my career, you were one of the few Fire Service leaders to call me and offer support. Your advice and support was priceless and I can only pay it forward. Rest easy Chief, it will take all of us but we will take it from here. God Bless your family.

Chief Brunacini's messages back in the 70s were a whole new concept to what I had been taught in the fire service. What an idea ~ "be nice" ~ "lead by example" ~ streamline fire ground communications ~ take care of your customers. He taught me so much and each time we met he made me feel important. He was a legend that taught an entirely new set of concepts; yet was kind, humble and funny. He will be missed, yet never forgotten.

I had the privilege of serving my fire service career in a city adjacent to Phoenix. Being in such close proximity I was fortunate to attend many meetings and seminars with The Chief. Most memorable was a question and answer session where a participant asked him what about disciplining firefighters. This was at a time when the news media in Phoenix was going crazy over an incident involving an elderly patient and a PFD crew who reportedly gave less than the standard of care set by the department. Bruno's answer was to the effect of: "What those members need is a hug, because if I know them, they are beating themselves up internally far worse than anything I could ever do to them". That sentiment remained with me and influenced my dealings with people for the remainder of my career and in retirement. RIP Chief, you have made the fire service better for the members and the people we serve.

My sincere condolences to the family , Candy, Nick & John. The night before he passed I was trying to explain about what a legend Chief Bruno was. When I learned of his passing another mentor described feeling heartbroken and that was exactly how I felt to. It was my distinct honour to meet Bruno at FDIC & be in his class. And then join him in Phonix for the Hazard Zone Conference. Engine 1 in all her glory was looking outstanding!!
Chief Bruno was nice, kind, funny, genuine, very smart, and a very forward thinker. He madev everyone he met feel special and important. That alone is huge. While studying for my Fire Service Leadership Chief Bruno's name kept coming up in regards to leadership & being cedited for the Customer Service model and others. So I based my univ. Papers on his work eg, Customer Service Model, Mrs. Smith, Command etc. Chief Bruno is and will continue to be an icon, a legend and I affectionately call him the Godfather of the Fire Service. Our Chief he loved his boys his other ones to and we had the deepest, respect, admiration and unfaltering support for him. And as bros.in our profession you could say we were extended family. He has left his earthly home but his legend and legacy will live on supporting the brotherhood. Candy, Nick and John you have that support while you do that as well we have your six. God-Bless. Rest In Peace Chief.

Bruno was a speaker at our regional fire conference. Afterward Bruno asked about a nice place to eat, I gave him suggestions & told him if they don't pan out, we lived 5 minute away. Knowing he would never stop by the home of a paramedic he just met,I left. 20 minutes later, my husband yelled that somebody was at the front door. There stood Bruno, looking a little less professional in his flowered shirt. He sat on our deck, ate burgers, & had a couple beers. He entertained us with story's well into the night. Our paths crossed several times through the years, & he never failed to remember my name & remind me that I made the best burgers ever. Only in my dreams would an icon like Bruno became my friend. Dreams came true that evening. My life is richer for having known him. He will be missed but his words & humor will live on.

Chief Brunacini set the standard for decency and kindness for the fire service. All the while, he made it fun and exciting to be a part of it. I first met Chief Brunacini as a recruit in class 86-1. The day "Bruno" arrived was a big deal! We spent the day before and the day of preparing the academy for his arrival, close to what you'd do if the president was coming. I have never forgotten that moment - to us he WAS the president. I have known Bruno since 1976 when I became a PFD member one of his B shifters that breaks an anvil in a sandbox. His customer service was evident for the 10 years I was on the Wallace and Ladmo TV show, I had access to any and all PFD assets and personnel to promote Fire safety to Arizona. As an Engineer on PFD I always had access to see him at work for any reason as Fire Chief in the Air Force reserve I travelled all over the world to fire stations from Germany to Iraq and all the military firefighters always ask if Bruno was as great as he seems, I always answered better he never forgot a name or face always nice. I always ran into Bruno at Fire Chiefs or FDIC conferences he always said aren't you on shift today. In the early 1990s Bruno was the keynote speaker at the FDIC in Indianapolis in front of 1500 military fire chiefs and others he was talking about customer service and started talking about me and pointed me out and said that I was featured in a chapter of the best selling book "Chicken Soup for the soul" I didn't even know about it at that time, Bruno invited me to lunch and upon my return a group of my friends bought all the copies from 2 book stores and wanted me and Bruno to sign them. There is so much he has done for me too much to mention but this world will miss him as I do. The most significant thing Bruno told me that I will never forget is "Never take yourself too seriously".

We had Chief Brunacini as a speaker in Christiana Delaware in the 80's when he first went on the road with " Fire Command " program. What a great program, we had over 300 attend and they are gained something,
He never forgot my name and always said hello when I ran into him across
the Country.
He was and is an icon in the Fire Service and will be greatly missed.

Thanks for your belief and support in Tiller and Friends. Without it Fire and Life safety education would not be where it is today. Your devotion and support helped us to carry the message across the country. Your belief in the importance of Fire and Life safety education made many more aware of it's importance. Thank you for bringing out the best in us when the best was needed. I shall always cherish my time with such a great and noble man. Spark Ranger

Chief,
YOU were the first fire service icon to ever influence my fire service career. I have read everything you've written, and attended many of your classes (Some twice)!! I will always remember arriving very early for a lecture you were giving at the BGSU State Fire School in Bowling Green, Ohio one evening only to find you sitting in the lobby outside the lecture hall all alone staring out the window at the rain. I was incredibly nervous to be in my heroes presence one on one!!! You, being you, immediately put me at ease by asking me what that wet stuff was falling from the sky. I said rain sir, you chuckled and said " oh, is that what you call that"?, we don't get that in Phoenix". Then you treated me like a good friend by having me sit down for what would be one of the very best 20 minute fire tactics chats I've ever had!! THANK YOU for your incredible professional and personal teachings. I am now, many years later, a Battalion Chief in Toledo, Ohio, a father, and grandfather, and grandfather to be again!!! Know that in my entire life, you absolutely helped set and keep my life compass set to TRUE NORTH!!! Much of how I am as a Battalion Chief and person is because of your incredible example, I am eternally grateful sir!!
MAY YOU REST ALWAYS IN GOD'S PEACE, and ALL MY PRAYERS ARE WITH YOUR WONDERFUL FAMILY! RIP SIR.

I don't remember where or when, but we were doing a show and among other books "Essentials of Fire Department Customer Service" was on the table. Two guys picked up a copy, made some rude comments about it, put it down, then left. Another person who was watching this looked at them, looked at me, and said: "what schmucks". As of 5 minutes ago we have sold 1,113 copies - possibly the largest number of any title we have ever sold. Ira Hoffman, FSP Books and Videos.

Chief Brunacini was a " one of a kind", never to be duplicated, Fire Chief! His legacy will live on in the American Fire Service and will forever be an example of what is possible to achieve if folks work together. Thanks for creating the " Golden Age" for the PFD! Best Boss ever!!!
Rest easy.....

I first heard him speak in the mid 1980's at the Lawrence Livermore Labs in California. I really appreciated his humor and will miss his wisdom on just about everything, especially customer service. He came to teach in Marin County several times over the years, and visited Skywalker Ranch, which he referred to as a "vuja de" experience, which he explained was the opposite of "deja vue", meaning never seen anything like that before. We talked briefly about our old Mack fire trucks at the Fresno Training officers workshop in November of 2016, and it was great to see him. I am happy to send the photo fromhis Skywalker Ranch visit if the family would like. We will be doing a memorial page for him on our Marin Fire History website at www.marinfirehistory.org What a wonderful human being. All my best, Tom Forster

In the early 1980's I got a copy of Fire Command and read it cover to cover. I then got to see Chief Brunacini for the first time in about 1987 when he taught a weekend FGC seminar at a high school in Indiana. I was hooked from that point on. Over the years I was a student in many of the Chief's classes and each of them helped my career in so many ways.
My sincere condolences to the Brunacini family and the members of the Phoenix Fire Department. You are in my prayers.

My deepest condolences to Bruno's family and the Phoenix Fire Department. I met Bruno 40 years ago at the National Staff & Command School and many times after that at a number of venues. I was honored to be one of the reviewers of one of his first books and to present him the President's Award at FRI in 2006. Our last visit was in Alabama last February at the SPAAMFAA Winter Conference. Between kicking the tires of old fire trucks at the muster, chatting about Mack pumpers and other war stories we renewed old friendships and laughed. It was a wonderful time and now he has a more wonderful time with the angels. Rest in Peace my friend.

Bruno... I was fortunate to come into the Phoenix Fire Dept. early on in your tenure and witnessed the monumental changes that you were responsible for in the PFD and the fire service as a whole. Those innovations built the PFD into the professional and nationally respected organization that it is today. We became a much smarter and safer department as a result, and we all owe you a huge debt of gratitude. Thanks Chief. RIP. You will be greatly missed.

Chief Bruno was always interested in you, remembered your name, and smiled. When the City of Phoenix adopted a new City seal (Phoenix Bird) I had the pleasure of working with the Department to help integrate decals and still maintain a fire service sense of decorum. One day I mentioned to the Chief that there were studies around the world touting yellow as a better choice for fire truck paint schemes. The next time we met he said, "Oh, by the way, I asked God what color fire trucks should be, and SHE said red..." Enough said. His humor and smile will be missed. So, too, the great and wonderful things he did to make fire service better, safer and innovative. There is probably no fire department in the world where you cannot find someone who has been touched by his training or ideas. His legacy is sure to inspire others. All it will take is a handful to remember his wisdom, passion and attention to care. He will be missed, but not forgotten.

Chief Brunacini was an amazing man! The first fire service publication I read after starting in the fire service in 1985 was Fire Command. You were my hero from that moment on! On a trip to Phoenix several years ago, my wife and I were welcomed into your home. It was derby day. Your grandchildren were wearing derby hats and preparing to go out to watch the race. We were welcomed in like we we had been friends of the family for years. The wisdom and insight provided by you and Rita, are cherished, and referred back to almost daily. I have had opportunity/need to call a few times for guidance and insight since. My calls were always taken, and were never rushed. Every time I saw the Chief at a class or conference after that, he would always (as in every time!) come up to me, shake my hand, say hi, and extend the invitation to visit again. We are eternally grateful to the entire Brunacini family for sharing the Chief and the man with us, and with the world. You are forever in our thoughts and prayers.

My sincere condolences to the Brunacini family. One of my mentors described feeling heartbroken to learn of the Chief's passing. Agreed that's how I felt to. I first overheard Chief Brunacini's name in a discussion between two Chiefs when I was a rookie. And I knew right then I needed to learn more. Years later I was studying Fire Service Leadership and guess who's name kept popping up. I soon realized during my career I never was intoduced how to take care of Mrs.Smith. And that the Chief was credited with creating the customer service model among pioneering many other models still being intoduced today. My Prof. was very well known and Learned. In one of my assignments I had to find & describe an ideal code of conduct \ ethics model in a 3000 word essay. I soon gravitated to the model used by the Phoenix Fire Dept. Was praised by my prof. on finding and describing such an excellent example-98%. 2% deduction for not comparing it to a bad one.
Chief Bruno as we all know could make simple solutions from complex matters. I soon was following his work everywhere. Had the distinct honour to finally meet him in person at FDIC & attend his class (and again later at the Hazard Zone Conference). He was so warm and genuine. Reassuring me we were going to learn and have fun. We did. As he was describing how important some things were to some people before thinking about it I said to him important like that next new shiny part for your 52 L Mack your restoring? Everyone laughed. Bruno laughed to then in fun said Davidson I can send you right back across that border, and I can make it happen!!
He made everyone feel like the most important person, and many others say the same thing. Truly one of the most influential, well respected, knowledgeable fire service leaders of all time. I was just trying to explain to my daughter the night before he passed what a legend he was. And his legacy will continue for many generations. Our Chief, the Godfather of the Fire Service. R.I.P God Bless

I first met Chief Brunacini at a seminar he was conducting during the 1980's in Albany, New York. The first words out of his mouth were it is good to be home. I was miffed by this when I talked with him after he was done to find out he grew up near Jamestown, New York about 50 miles from where I worked and retired from the Fire Service. We became friends and met many times across the nation at all the conferences, especially during the NYS Chiefs Conferences. Thank you Chief, you molded me in my career climb and abilities to keep my firefighters safe throughout my time serving Mrs. Smith. My condolences to the Brunacini family and of course your long distance family throughout America and beyond. You touch us in ways that no one can describe in any fashion. So... early on in the "Fire Command" legacy, Bruno came to Connecticut to share his vision as a fund raiser for CT Public Education. In addition to his knowledge and delivery, I was most impressed by how humble he was. I had the opportunity to spend time with him, sitting on the floor outside the conference room of the hotel, discussing life in the Fire Department. I completely enjoyed this time and will never forget it or the lessons I received. Rest easy Bruno we'll take care of Mrs. Smith for you now.

After many years of following and studying the lessons of Chief Brunacini, I finally got pleasure to meet my long time hero at this years Hazard Zone Management Conference. I'll always remember trying to remain calm and not seem like too much of a fan boy as I stood there speaking with the three Brunacini men. The next day when The Chief came up and asked Hey Nick, how was your night? All I could think was Oh my god he remembered my name! I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to meet and speak with him.
As he would have said, I'm only smart because of my mistakes. To me that not only speak to his vast knowledge and great integrity but also to his love for his fellow firefighters. He was always willing to share the failures and successes as lessons learned and to keep us all from making the same mistakes.
The fire services owes a magnificent debt to Chief Brunacini, he will be greatly missed by all.

My condolences to all the Brunacini Family. My husband, Elby Bushong, Jr. always credited "Bruno" for giving him the opportunity to have the career of a lifetime. He always said that he could talk to Bruno about anything in their own "language" and their shared love of Hawaiian shirts is still evident in our closet. I met Bruno in Des Moines when he did a presentation here with Chief Rubin back in late 90s and I was fortunate enough to go to dinner with him. At dinner when I asked him what I had to do to do a "ride along" with PFD, he simply said "call my office and then show up... but don't be late" followed by his infamous yet gracious grin. I called. I showed up. And I definitely wasn't late! And it was truly a memorable experience in my career as the shift I rode with that day (Sta. 22 south side) exemplified everything Chief Brunacini aspired them to be. And they were nice. =)

I don't think anyone in the fire service can say that Chief Brunacini hasn't touched their careers. But his dedication to customer service and approach to incident command really changed my approach to the job when I discovered them. I had the chance to meet and thank the Chief in person, Hawiian shirt and all, and he was gracious in response to what was surely yet another of thousands of grateful firefighters. My thoughts are with his family and those whose lives he touched. His reach was wide, and influence invaluable.

As many have written in recent days, he always had time to talk with you and was most gracious. The fire service was job one. He made bettering it his mission. I first met him in 1984 at a Fire Command seminar and a few other occasion over the years. Most memorable was cocktails at a hotel lobby during FDIC several years ago. One of the things that I admired about Bruno was his dedication to all of the people that worked in the PFD. I heard him say, many times, that we, as a department, should care for the members "from cradle to the grave." I have seen this become a reality.
I first met Bruno in 1972 when he was "acting" Chief for Battalion 3. He had recently passed the Bat Chief's test. The whole Dept. was watching as he made his assent and brought us out of the dark ages into the 20th and 21st centuries. Thank you Bruno. May you rest in peace, and may God's perpetual light shine upon you. May your family be filled with scores of memories of shared love and laughter. Sincerely, R T De Friese, Ret. Capt. PFD

The Phoenix Fire Department was the greatest influence in my life, and it was such a privilege to call it my home for 24 years. Our Chief was responsible for that home. But Bruno was so much more than our Chief, you never wanted to let him down, like you wouldn't want to let down your dad. It was also my great pleasure to have served with his sons, and my deepest condolences go out to the Brunicini family. I can't think of a better legacy for Bruno than the ''Be Nice" stickers he had made for our helmets. Such a simple thing, but it was our guiding principle, and a good thing for us all to aspire to.

This is such sad, sad news. In the 1980's and 90's, Bruno always made time for our frequent visits over chorizo and eggs. He was the Fire Chief and I was a Phoenix police officer. More importantly, he was my mentor. I admired deeply his management style and casual problem solving. One day over lunch, he mentioned that he was finishing a fire fighting textbook. I told him I wanted to read it. He chuckled and said, Why do you want to read a book about fire trucks, hoses and ladders? Respectfully, I replied, I wanted to know how his brain worked particularly tactically. About a week later I received the book in the mail with a personal note, which read, in part, I hope you enjoy the book it's all simple stuff, (signed) Bruno. Yeah, simple stuff, I smiled, during routine chaos. I still have the book. About 15 years later, as a management member of US DHS, while attending a leadership course, the instructor told the law enforcement audience about an unassuming giant of a man he knew named Alan Brunacini and his simple yet effective leadership style called, Be nice. I smiled again. We served during some of the most tumultuous times and some greatest times in the city's history. I felt pure pride when the city of Phoenix was awarded the Best Run City in the World honor thanks in so many ways to the leadership of people like Phoenix Fire Chief Alan Brunacini, Fire Captain Pat Cantelme, and Phoenix Police Chief Dennis Garrett. The city of Phoenix has the best Fire Department in America because of Bruno's unselfish, quiet legacy. I miss him. Rest easy, sir. Mike Petchel, PPD (Ret.)

So, Fish showed up, then Smut, then Nick, and it was the most incredible day. It sure opened my eyes to the other side of the FD.
Fish told Nick, "Call Bruno and Rita and tell them to bring lots of cake and ice cream.".. Early after noon Chief Brunacini & Rita showed up in their cool 2 dr. HT Coup da ville Cad, and in his cool calm and collective manner, popped the trunk and there to our wondering eyes did appear, but Thanks giving dinner all set up in huge chaffing dishes, ready for us hungry FF's to devour... I was a fairly new member on the Glendale Fire Department and was being sent on an errand. Approaching the intersection of 43rd and Bethany, I see a little guy in a denim shirt and jeans running around in the middle of the intersection, I flipped on the lights and got out to help. There is a load of steel spread over the street, I start picking it up and loading it back on the truck. When all of it was on the truck, he looked up at me, it was Bruno! He shook my hand and asked my name, from that day forward he never forgot my name and always made sure to say hi to me.
I always felt it was an honor to be in his audience, I knew two things were going to happen, 1. I was going to learn something 2. I was going to laugh! My heart has been heavy since I heard the news, but I know for certain the angels are going to be laughing and they just might learn a thing or two.
Till we meet again, God Speed Chief!

Alan Brunacini, AVB, "Green Ink", Bruno, he is the "Father of the Modern Fire Service." I was so fortunate to have Bruno as a part of my life. In 1968, on the Oral Board for the Phoenix Fire Department, he took a chance on an 18 year-old kid just out of high school. Ten years later in 1978, he became Fire Chief in March and I became Union President in September. We worked together for the next 20 years (Fire Chief and Union President) to make so many changes in the PFD. I credit Bruno for helping create the Fire Command/Operations protocol used by most fire departments in the US as well as many other countries, Automatic Aid, Safety protocols, NFPA 1500, 4 person staffing, safer equipment and apparatus, accountability procedures, Emergency Ambulance Transportation, Tactical Services, Labor/Management procedures (the RBO Process) and probably most important, his love and care for fire fighters and the citizens of each community (Mrs. Smith). I know of no one, before or since who had a greater concern and empathy for his fellow fire fighter or fellow man. We are a better community because of you. My love and respect goes out to you, Rita, John, Candy, Nick and the entire Brunacini "famiglia".

I remember taking a tactics class from Bruno, he had such a rich vocabulary that I was translating what he said to the guys around me because they didn't understand his "50 cent " words. Dear Bruno,
You have gone ahead to set up the new Blue Card program for all of us to learn when we follow you. Please keep the 3x5 cards at hand to scribble down your thoughts and observations. They should be most interesting. And don't forget the green ink!!!
I, along with many, many others will miss having you call us into your office for some fatherly (mostly) advice. We had many talks but the one we had on the side board of "The Mack" will live with me forever!!!
Bless you my friend and all of the Brunacini Family. You have returned to quarters for the final time and a job very welll done!

I could tell Bruno stories for hours. Since his retirement we have made a point to meet regularly for breakfast. Every time, I mean every time we met I knew something magical was about to happen and it did. It usually started by Bruno grabbing a napkin and then writing down some idea he had in his head and that we were going to talk about for the next hour or so. I am going to breakfast tomorrow and I will order him his wheat pancake with yogart, ice tea and a side of cottage cheese. Then I will reflect on what a great, great leader he was, what a great family man he was, what a great teacher he was and mostly what a great friend he was to a wretch like me. Thank you Chief

I was first introduced to Chief Alan Brunacini while in College studying Fire Science. I remember one of my courses was building construction and we used his book. Now that I am retired from the fire service with 25 yrs as an Asst Fire Chief, I can tell you that I still have his building construction in the fire service book to me this day and have no doubt that his teachings not only saved my life but also many other firefighters lives as well....whether they read it or their Officers read it and knew the dangers of building construction. Later, as I became a fire officer, I then turned to his wisdom again with his book Fire Command. It is said that the goal of the senior man is to give the ability for the young firefighter to become an old firefighter. Chief Bruno did just that with me. I too, am a huge fan of Hawaiian shirts as I have at least 6 of them and wear them often. My thoughts and prayers with the family during this difficult time as Chief Bruno's brothers/sisters all over are mourning his loss and the loss to the fire service. Even though he is not with us physically, his teachings and wisdom will live on, thus saving even more firefighters. RFB Remember Fallen Brother, KTF Keep The Faith.

My condolences to his family. I never got to meet him but read many of his articles. I sold E-One fire trucks here in Central PA for a couple of years and saw the engines that E-One built for the Chief. He will be miss by many but never replaced nor forgotten. Rest in peace Brother Firefighter.

Met Chief Brinacini in the 70's in a class on incident command. Magnificent leader who was humble, self effacing, humorous, realistic, and driven. His focus on the customer was transformational. Prior to Chief Brinacini we simply focused on ourselves, not who
We served. I believe the Chief
changed the fire service forever.......for the better. May God hold you in his arms and welcome you into eternal happiness for all the good you have done for society.

The Chief was such an amazing individual. He taught with knowledge, experience, wisdom, wit, and humor, and brought forward new ideas in an amazing way. Whether at FDIC, or every little corner of this great nation he was at, he always made everyone feel that their job was important regardless of how small it was. My sincere condolences to the Brunacini Family. Eternal memory Chief!

I thank, the Brunacini family for all the years you shared Alan with so many of us. I first met him in the mid 1970's at a training class. He impacted me as a firefighter, training officer and Fire Chief. We built a great relationship over the years but in particular I enjoyed our personal visits, his mentoring, his exceptional abilities as leader, trainer, humility, sense of humor/common sense. His love of family/ the service , compassion to help others in need, and his inspiration for so many of us in the Fire Service can never be overstated. I will never forget the times we taught and interacted at the Western Training Officer's conferences. He is truly someone who will never be forgotten. The mark he has left on so many will continue to keep his spirit alive through the example he has set for all of us. May God bless him and all the Brunacini family

Chief Brunacini was a true leader in the fire service. I had the pleasure of meeting Alan a few times and always admired his down to earth demeaner, while consistently focusing on the boots on the ground and the customers they serve. His lessons and leadership will carry on for many years to come.

I had the pleasure of eating BBQ side by side with Chief Brunacini when he was speaking in Georgia several years ago. The organizer of the event later shared with me that I was sitting so close to him that "if Chief Brunacini had a pimple, I would have had a dimple". It was a very neat experience to be beside someone with that level of influence in your professsion. I am sure that there are hundreds of experiences like this across America, but I am glad to have met and shared company with a fire service icon, leader and mentor. What an example of servant leadership he was.
