Anthony Charles D’Ambrosio (Tony), born June 17, 1940 in Herkimer, New York passed away peacefully March 3, 2018 in Phoenix, Arizona surrounded by family. He was the proud son of Margaret and Lou D’Ambrosio (Lou Ambers), Lightweight Boxing Champion of the World. He is preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Dr. Regina D’Ambrosio. He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Irene; his daughter Margie Roper-Fagnani (John); son Lou D’Ambrosio; son Anthony D’Ambrosio (Kyndal); grandsons: Michael, Austin, Blaine, Trent, and Brayden; granddaughter Amber; and brother Lou D’Ambrosio (Phyllis). He is also survived by his brother-in-law Angelo Iannuzzi (Carmella); nephew Jason D’Ambrosio (Asja); nieces Jessica D’Ambrosio, Carina Iannuzzi, and Tiana Iannuzzi; and many other cherished family and friends.
Anthony, an avid Sun Devil fan, attended Arizona State University for three years when he was compelled to serve his country and joined the United States Army. Upon his return from Germany he found the love of his life and wife to be, Irene Iannuzzi, and they married in 1966. Shortly thereafter they began their family, having their children Margie (1968), Lou (1969), and Anthony (1975). He worked in the sales department for Dolphin Inc., an investment casting company, for twenty-eight years.
Known as Tony to most and Uncle Tony to a special few, he is admired as husband, dad, and papa. He enjoyed being with family and friends savoring his wife’s cooking and a vodka martini. Anthony had a love for gardening, long road trips, hunting, fishing, being the captain of houseboats on Lake Powell, coaching little league, the beach, and summers in Herkimer with his countless cousins. While instilling an importance to work hard and stay in school, he also spoiled his family with many beautiful vacations. Above all, his Catholic faith was the foundation on which he lived his life.
Born as the first child to Lou Ambers, he carried a special pride growing up as the son of his boxing champion father. Anthony cherished the memories of his childhood and would share his experiences and stories with all. Everyone that knows him also knows how much he enjoyed going to Las Vegas, playing the lotto, and scratchers. He was an enthusiastic fan of the Arizona Diamondbacks, Phoenix Suns, and Sun Devil Football.
Anthony grew up wanting to be a boxer just like his dad, and although that was not to be, he fought valiantly against his cancer. While it ultimately took him away, he handled it with grace and strength, never letting it take his spirit. For this, Anthony became his own champion and proved to be an inspiration to all he came in contact with.
Visitation will be Friday, March 9th 2018 from 6-8 pm at A. L. Moore-Grimshaw 710 W. Bethany Home Rd. with a Funeral Mass March 10th, 2018 at 10:00 am at St. Gregory's Catholic Church 3424 N. 18th Ave. Phoenix, AZ.
