With great confidence I can truly say we lost a resilient woman.
Azhar Gewarges shared the gift of resilience everywhere she went. She embodied courage and faith to see beyond the pain cancer had brought on. Not only did she fight for herself but for many others that also had cancer themselves.
She shed tears nobody saw for people she didn’t know. She prayed without an audience. She held the pain in her eyes of every cancer patient she came across in the waiting room along with hers.
So now I end with great confidence saying those who knew Azhar Gewarges can confirm she was a gift and had a gift that will live in the lives of many. The gift of resilience.
Below is a poem written by her beautiful granddaughter:
INNER MONOLOGUE
In a small town in Iraq
In a destroyed shack
All because of bombing
Had sleepless nights
That were not calming
She had to leave her home
She always felt alone
She had the biggest dreams
But life is not always what it seems
She wanted a happy family
But she had no sense of familiarity
There isn’t much clarity
Her dream to be a flight attendant descended
As the trauma grew
The pills were not as new
All these new sicknesses
They were not a picnic
In and out of hospitals
Her life looked miserable
As she grew old
Her happiness was sold
As she kept on praying
Her heart believed as it kept on saying…….
She was strong in her faith
That could not be erased
God Made her feel safe
As the days with her family came to an end
She thinks, this is not the life I wanted to spend
Her spouse was laid to rest
Her life was once again put to the test
She was next
In her empty home
She always felt so very alone
