Barbara Catherine Garrity, a longtime resident of Phoenix, Arizona, passed away on December 8, 2025, at the age of 88. Born in Denver, Colorado, she was raised in Phoenix by her parents, Frances and Lee Henigar. Barbara was a proud graduate of North Phoenix High School, attended Grand Canyon College and later earned her degree from Phoenix College.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Joseph Eugene “Gene” Garrity.
Once her children began school, Barbara found her professional calling in elementary education. She flourished in grade school administrative roles, where she developed deep, lifelong friendships that she cherished dearly.
Barbara is survived by her brother, Michael Henigar (Mary); her children, Mary Frances LiBrandi (whose husband, Joseph P. LiBrandi, preceded her in death), Mark Vincent Garrity (partner Leonard), and her youngest daughter, Patricia “Patti” Lee Garrity, all of Phoenix. In her later and through her final years, Barbara lived with Patti, who ensured she enjoyed a full, vibrant, and socially active life. Barbara also felt profoundly blessed by her four wonderful grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Best described as clever and witty, Barbara had a passion for family, friends, and her pets. She famously delighted her grandchildren with what she called "Tall Tales" and treasured the memories of traveling with her family throughout her life.
Barbara’s family wishes to express their sincere gratitude for the outreach and support from friends during this time. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you take someone you love out for a fantastic dessert in her honor—Barbara never met a dessert she didn’t love.
Memorial Celebration Service
A service to honor Barbara’s life will be held on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, at 3:30 PM, with a reception immediately following.
