

Carrie Zane Mason Hughes, 84, of Glendale, AZ, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on September 12, 2016. Born on November 4, 1931 in Stockton, NJ, she was the only child of the late Carrie Dorwood Zane Mason and the late William Past Mason, Jr. of Stockton, NJ. Besides being preceded in death by her parents, she is also preceded in death by her infant son, Matthew John; her youngest son, Thomas Barry; and a son-in-law, Carey P. White. Carrie is survived by her loving husband of over 63 years, Chester William Hughes, Sr., of Glendale, AZ; her six living children: two daughters, Gail Doris Hughes White and Jill Justine Hughes; four sons, Chester William Hughes, Jr. (Kathy); William Mason Hughes (Kelli); Mark David Hughes(Beth) all of Glendale, AZ; and James Lincoln Hughes (Jennifer) of Phoenix, AZ. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Kellie McGarry (Charles); Matthew White; Matthew Hughes; Lindsay LaPre' (Stephen); Chester W. Hughes III; Rihana Smith;Timothy White; Mark Hughes; Jonathan Mason Hughes(Kelsey); Justin Hughes(Amber); Carrie Hughes; Heather Hughes; Cheyenne Sauls; Cierra Sauls and great-grandchildren: Matthew Carter; John McGarry; Briana McGarry; Brylee LaPre'; Kaden Hartley; Harmony Hughes; and a great- grandchild due in January 2017. In high school, Carrie was involved with the performing arts, singing, playing piano, clarinet, sax, and was in marching and jazz band. Carrie also enjoyed dancing. She was extremely patriotic and proud of her family heritage. After graduating from Lambertville High School at the top of her class, she went on to work in Trenton, NJ as a secretary. This is where one day after work she was rescued by a Trenton police officer, Chester Hughes, who later became her husband. Carrie and Chester (Chet) were married on Nov. 22, 1952 at Sandy Ridge Baptist Church in Stockton, NJ. Carrie's life centered on a deep love for her family and she was a devoted Christian, being a positive influence for her family and all those who knew her. She was active in all aspects of her children's lives and shared her love of music, teaching her children to harmonize and play instruments. Because of her love for learning and her sharp mind to the end, she liked to challenge herself by memorizing many facts, Bible verses and doing Sudoku puzzles. Carrie and Chet lived in Trenton and Hamilton, NJ, before moving to Phoenix, AZ in 1983 and later to Glendale, AZ. She was a member of West Phoenix Baptist Church. Carrie will forever be in our hearts and we cherish the time we had with her. She will be deeply missed. A celebration of Carrie's life will be held on September 24, 2016 at Phoenix Memorial Park and Mortuary, 200 W. Beardsley Road, Phoenix, AZ, with a Viewing at 1pm, Service at 2pm and a Graveside Service immediately following. Her son, Rev. W. Mason Hughes will officiate.
