Cleta was a remarkable woman who raised an amazing, loving family - such a tribute to her unshakable faith and love.  I remain in awe of the love she inspired in her husband, children, and great-grandchildren - she was a precious gift to all of them.  If I could feel that my own life mirrored just a small fraction of the inspiration she provided through hers, I would consider my life well-lived.  God Bless Cleta and her wonderful family, always.

When I received the news that she was in the hospital, I went down to see her. Cleda was a lady of very few words. The one thing I will never forget was when I walked into her hospital room and she said, “Hi, Sis…I Love You.” And I said, “I love you too, Cleda.” Those were our last words together. 
She was so very sick and is now out of her suffering and is in heaven. I am sure she and Phil are having a good conversation about all of us.
I do believe that if I keep Christ number one in my life and you do too, we will all meet again.

I am so sorry and heartbroken over your loss. Haley is so right, Cleda was an amazing woman. I never saw her without a smile or a kind word to say. The love in their home glowed! She truly was an angel on earth to everyone who knew her. Ron aka(dad) my prayers are forever with you. Wendy my dear friend remember always the memories for they can never be taken away. Your mother will continue to watch over all of you. Protect you and guide you all just as she did on earth. She received the golden wings in heaven and they are lucky to have her. God bless you and your entire family and know she is at peace and in the arms of God.

I don't think Haley could have said it better. My grandma was an amazing woman who would do anything for her family. My grandparents had the perfect marriage that everyone hopes and dreams of having they raised a beautiful family and has left behind a family that loves her dearly. You never saw my grandma without a smile on her face she was truly and angel from heaven and although heaven has gained a beautiful angel she will always be here with us and forever remembered in our hearts. My grandma held on until the end she was a strong woman and god finally called her home so she didn't have to suffer anymore and although I'm sad she's not with us anymore I'm happy for her because she no longer has to suffer. We love and miss you and we know you are watching down protecting all of us now.

My Grandma’s Story

     I believe people are curious about their families past, but never find the time to hear about.  For those of you who don’t know, I’m Haley and I made the decision to find out.  It was a few weeks ago when I sat down for hours while grandma told me about her life, and you would never believe how much her face light when she was telling her stories.  Many of you may have heard these stories once or twice ore even had the privilege to be part of them.

     My grandma’s name was Cleda Loretta Avis Dick James.  She was the second out of four children and was born September 2, 1935.  The first born in her family was Mary Annet, then her, then the twins Steele Emery E. Dick, and Sally Anne.  Her parent’s names were Nancy Jane and Lynn Coe; she says her dad was very funny and always called her Lila, and that her parents were great people so I know where she gets it from.  They were all born in Homer City, Pennsylvania, and lived on a farm with a railroad running through it, in a red brick two story house.  She lived in the house with her siblings, parents and grandparents.  They grew everything they ever needed, and only bought things like flour, sugar, and coffee.  They had a smoke house where they would get bacon from the pigs and she stressed many times on how yummy it smelt.  On their farm they all found ways to help out by doing  things such as pick strawberries, bail hay, and collect eggs from the chicken coop; which brought many adventures for Grandma and aunt Net when one had to fight away the rooster with the broom while the other one grabbed the eggs.  For school they would walk down the railroad tract to a little red school house from grades k-6th in one building with one teacher!  Sounds crazy huh?  Around this time grandma had brownish-blonde hair that went way past her butt, which she had to braid before school every day.  Until she finally got tired of it enough to go to the beauty shop and get it cut once she got a job.  For her outfits, she had a Sunday dress, a school dress, and play clothes that were all made from flower buds; so they had to do a lot of laundry!  There are many stories about Pennsylvania that I would of loved to been a part of, but defiantly enjoyed hearing about even more.
     
     When my grandma was 10 years old in 1947, she moved to Phoenix, Arizona.  The first place she stayed was a small trailer in Montezuma Court on Van Buren, back when it was still new.  After that, she moved to 1537 W. McKinley; which I was able to drive by and see.  For school in 7th grade she attended Edison and for 8th grade attended Monroe; which was the first time she had ever eaten in a cafeteria!  To get to these schools she had to walk from 15th Ave to 7th Street with her siblings.  After graduating from 8th grade when attended and graduated from Phoenix Union High School in 1953.  By this time she had a job and worked as a cook at Hamburger Inn; which is where she met my grandpa!  

     Grandma was employed with Aunt Nancy (grandpa’s sister), who introduced them when grandpa went in to eat.  They had a connection so grandpa asked her out on a date.  Their first date was at the Ice Capades, which I imagine to be something like Disney on Ice.  After 3 months of dating these two amazing people decided they wanted to be together for the rest of their lives.  Both of their parents approved and the wedding was on for March 26th, 1955.  The location was at the “Church of God” on 44th and McKinley and their pastor Hersle L. Diffy was the one who did the honors.  After this day grandma never had to work another day in her life and grandpa was able to support here through everything.  After they were married they rented a total of two small houses, and moved in with grandma and grandpa Dick, until they were able to buy a small house on 201 East El Camino where they had their first child Ronnie Eugene who slept in the dresser drawer.  Finally, they moved to 3507 W. Colter where they raised the rest of their children Cynthia Ann, Lewis Benton, Sandra Joy, Michael David and Wendy Lou.  They have owned this house for 51 years to this day.

     My grandparents did an absolute amazing job raising their children and they did an amazing job raising their own children.  And I will do my best to keep the legacy going.  My grandma had a total 23 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren the day she passed away.  She will never be forgotten and she will always be watching over us.  She was the heart of our family, and now more than ever we need to stay together and be strong.  Grandma lived an amazing life and now is in heaven running the streets of gold with absolutely no pain.  We will all miss her like crazy but we will see her again.  She sure has to save a lot of spots up there in heaven.  I love you grandma.
