David Allen Atchison passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, in Phoenix, AZ, at the age of 66. He was a loving husband, father, gramps, son, brother, uncle and friend who was loved by us all. David lived his life with passion for his family... He was our rock.
David was born on July 27, 1959, in Fargo, ND, to Marcia Thompson and Corky Atchison, and had three brothers. Growing up, he spent time in Crystal, Moorhead and Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. He was a great cross-country runner, hockey player and dirt bike rider. He graduated from Cooper High School in Crystal and then attended Moorhead Tech School to study HVAC. Dave was a fitness buff and loved swimming, hiking, biking and going to the gym. He was always listening to music and especially loved 70's classic rock and music that soothed the soul.
Dave met his wife Peggy in Minnesota, and they moved to Arizona in 1979. They were married in 1980 and celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary in January 2025. They had two daughters together, Sara Ann and Hailey Irene, which were their joy, and brought so much happiness and love to their life. While the girls were young, he enjoyed coaching their soccer games. What a wonderful father he was! Dave loved to fish and passed that passion onto his daughters. Many days were spent on the lake enjoying the sun, the breeze and the tranquility of being by the water. Wonderful memories were made on family vacations in the Colorado mountains... on ski trips in the winter, and hiking, boating and exploring in the summer. The beach and being by the ocean were also a favorite place to spend time and be together... from the Oregon coastline to Laguna Beach and San Diego... all cherished moments in time. Our family loved to hike the West Fork Trail in Sedona, where it became an annual tradition to go in the autumn when the leaves were turning color. We all seemed to just relish in the beauty of nature. The Grands... Maddie, Jack, Elaina and Olivia were the light of his life.
Dave had a strong work ethic and was a successful entrepreneur building a prosperous HVAC business and construction company. His customers loved him and trusted him. He built several houses, as well as remodeled several homes. He could fix anything. Dave was a huge animal lover, and had rescued many, many, many dogs off the streets, and adopted several as well. He was also very generous in donating to several charitable organizations that touched his heart.
David is survived by his wife Peggy, daughters: Sara and husband Bob Frie, Hailey and husband Kyle Towles. Dave had four grandchildren: Madeleine, Jack and twins Elaina and Olivia. His Dad, Corky Atchison, Stepdad, Vern Thompson. His brothers, Jeff Atchison and wife Kelly, Todd and wife Sarah, and their children: Erik and Alex, and John Thompson and wife Vicky and their daughter Liz.
Our beloved David will be forever in our hearts. We will honor him with a Celebration of Life at All Saints Lutheran Church in Phoenix on Wednesday, October 1st at 4:00PM.
