It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Gerald L Devine (Jerry), who left us on August 23, 2023 at the age of 87. He was born on December 21, 1935 in Kankakee, Illinois to John and Mae Devine. Jerry passed away peacefully at his home in New River, Arizona.
For over 40 years, Jerry worked at Mortell Company (which later became Dow Chemical). Starting from a humble beginning of sweeping floors at age 16, through hard work and dedication, he later went on to become a Plant Manager and Mechanical Engineer. He graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in business from Governor’s State University. In addition to being known for his passionate work ethic, he will always be remembered for his unfaltering dedication to his family, his commitment to help anyone in need, and his ability to fix almost anything. He touched the lives of countless people with his sense of humor, caring ways, and his exuberance for life. He was someone who befriended everyone he met and was known to thoroughly enjoy a good April Fool’s Joke. He loved to spend time with his family traveling, boating, and camping; and will always remain the “Lead Dog” in our family caravan of RVs. His presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Jerry is survived by his daughters: Laura (Rick) Johnston, Debbie (Steve) Wells, his sons: Stan Devine and Michael Devine. He was known as “Papa” to his 8 grandchildren, 3 step- granddaughters, 10 great grandchildren and 7 step-grandchildren, who all meant the world to him. He is preceded in death by his wife (Marcia), his sister-in-law (Peggy Carlen), his grandson (Bryan), his parents (John and Mae), his 11 brothers and sisters (Mildred, Stanley, Garland, John, Marceline, Robert, Leo, Margaret, Harold, Madeline and Leona) and his daughter-in-law (Heather Garner Devine).
Jerry will be cremated with a private celebration for immediate family.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to support Pastor Bob Lehman, whom Jerry admired for his service work with Mission Recharge, or The American Red Cross Gerald Devine Memorial fund.
Jerry’s family has so appreciated the love and support of family and friends during his time in hospice. Your continued prayers are welcomed.
