Shannon, John “Terry” 81 currently of Phoenix AZ, formerly a long-time resident of Leominster, MA passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 8th. Terry was born June 2, 1939 in Leominster, MA to John and Julie Shannon. Husband of the late Ellen S. Shannon, he leaves behind two daughters, Colleen M Shannon and her husband Scott Grane, of Phoenix, AZ and Terri-Ann Milligan and her husband Thom of Glocester RI. In addition, he also leaves behind two grandchildren, Shannon Milligan of Concord, NH and Owen Milligan of Glocester, RI with whom he enjoyed playing cribbage and checkers when they were together.
He graduated from Leominster High School in 1957 and received his bachelor’s degree in 1963 and master’s degree in 1967 in education from Fitchburg State College.
Terry started his teaching career in Ashby, MA where he taught social studies and physical education and coached girl’s basketball. He subsequently became a history and later a business teacher at Lunenburg High School where he taught for many years before changing careers and finally retiring from the Town of Westford, MA Water Department. During his career at Lunenburg High, he enjoyed coaching cross country and track and field as well as supporting other sports at the school. He was an active member in the Central MA Track and Field Officials Association as well as the Leominster Elks Lodge. He enjoyed officiating the Boston Marathon for many years. Terry and Ellen were seasonal summer campers at Wyman’s Beach in Westford, MA, where they developed long-term friendships and he worked as a supervisor of buildings and grounds.
Terry relished Sunday afternoon drives and exploring New England with his family. He continued this tradition when he retired to AZ, although he never could quite master the names of the cities and towns in AZ he visited with his MA accent.
Terry enjoyed the last five years of his life at the Beatitudes Campus in Phoenix, AZ, living independently until he passed. There he continued his “Sunday drives” on his electric scooter around the neighborhood surrounding the Beatitudes as well as taking in all the activity of the residents, both humans and animals. The family would like to thank all the caregivers and staff for the care and companionship he received while living there. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations be made to the Beatitudes Campus Foundation. (https://beatitudescampus.org/about/foundation/).
A memorial service is being arranged for a future date.
