

Keith Eugene Johnson was born on February 10, 1958, in Easton, MD. and raised in the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan area by Yvonne and Joe McKissic, where he was immersed in a vibrant cultural environment that sparked his lifelong love for music, particularly the drums. Keith’s childhood experiences laid the foundation for his passion for rhythm, where his journey into the world of percussion and the creation of his music company, Sankofa Island Magic specializing in Caribbean Steel Drums.
Keith’s love for percussion began in his youth when he was inspired by the rhythms of Afro-Cuban and Latin music in Washington, D.C.’s vibrant Adams Morgan community.
This early exposure to the beats of bongos and congas ignited a lifelong pursuit of rhythm that transcended genres and cultures. Keith’s journey led him to study under the renowned master drummer Yacub Addy of Ghana, where he learned the art of traditional African drumming and its rich history as a means of communication. His travels to West Africa, particularly Accra, Ghana, deepened his understanding of the cultural significance of drums, earning him the esteemed title of master drummer
In the early 1980s, Keith relocated to Arizona, where he fell in love with the beauty of the desert. In Arizona, he became a respected artist with the Arizona Arts Council, sharing his passion for music with schools and communities statewide for over two decades. Keith was especially dedicated to inspiring young musicians, encouraging them to compose and perform original music through programs at HIRSCH Academy, Paiute Neighborhood Center in Scottsdale and the Phoenix Conservatory of Music (PCM) to name a few. A lifelong learner, Keith sought out diverse musical traditions, including Caribbean steel drums. His dream came full circle when he met Elliott Mannette, the inventor of the steel drum, in Arizona—a serendipitous meeting that enriched his musical journey. Keith believed deeply in the transformative power of music, not only as an art form but as a bridge between cultures and communities. Keith often said, “By understanding the contribution music makes to culture and history, students are better prepared to live and work in multicultural settings.”
Keith Johnson was an active member of Pure Heart Church Peoria and Word of Abundant Life Christian Center. Where he shared the vibrance of his gift by serving in Music Ministry for many years. On, July 28, 2018, Keith was ordained to the office of Deacon at Word of Abundant Life Christian Center by the late Bishop Derone Robinson.
Keith Eugene Johnson was a devoted husband to the love of his life of 15 years his wife, Phoebe, a loving father to his daughter, Tiffany (AJ), and a proud grandfather to his cherished grandsons, Josiah and Jezziah. He is also survived by his siblings: Cynthia (Andre), Stephanie (Lionel), Loretha (Frank), Kimberly (Omar), Courtney, and Carolyn along with a host of extended family members and friends who will forever treasure his memory. Keith was preceded in death by his mother, Yvonne McKissic; father, Ervin Eugene Johnson; and stepfather, Joe McKissic.
Today we celebrate Keith’s life which was a symphony of rhythm, culture, and connection. His legacy lives on in the hearts of his family, students, and all who had the privilege of experiencing his music and spirit. May his beats resonate in our hearts forever.
