

With Profound sadness, we announce the passing of La Wanza Lett-Brewington, a woman of immense grace, strength and unwavering dedication to justice. She departed this world on Sunday February 2nd, 2025, in Turners Falls, Massachusetts leaving behind a legacy of love, advocacy and profound impact.
Born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, La Wanza dedicated her life to uplifting others. She had an extraordinary gift – making people feel truly heard, seen and understood. Her Work was more than a career; it was a calling. She spent years supporting survivors of domestic violence, guiding them toward hope and healing. She fought tirelessly against discrimination, founding the Discrimination Prevention Project in the Pioneer Valley and leading various University Women’s Centers. Upon Returning to Massachusetts, She became a trailblazer as the Title IX Coordinator for BCC and GCC, ensuring fairness and equity in education.
La Wanza’s impact extended beyond her professional work. She was a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, a passionate writer, Poet, and dreamer. Her words live on in her books, plays, and poems – testaments to her belief that we pour our love into the world, we leave it a better place. She, along with her late husband Dwayne Brewington, founded the Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration at greenfield community college, a tradition that just celebrated its 26th year this past January.
La Wanza is survived by her beloved children, Danton Brewington and Maya Brewington and her cherished sibling, Kwambe Mack, Dana Lett, Jearl Lett, Britney Lett and Father Marcel Lett. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Dwayne Brewington and her loving mother, Ida Mack. She leaves behind a lasting imprint on the many lives she touched, including her father Marcel Lett and countless friends, colleagues and community members who were fortunate enough to know her.
In remembrance of La Wanza, we encourage you to strive to make a positive difference – no matter how big or small. She reminded us all that “there is nothing ‘common’ about sense”- that fairness and justice require action, that love must be intentional, and that we each have a role in making the world better. Rest in power, La Wanza. Your Voice will forever echo in the lives you touched
