Marie Elaine Cappa was born on December 1, 1944, in Staten Island, New York. She lived there until 1977 when she moved to Phoenix, Arizona, with her husband Martin, their son Luke, and her entire family. Marie was a devoted wife, mother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend, known for her kindness and gentle spirit.
Marie had a fulfilling career, most notably as a Customer Service and Claims Processor at American Family Insurance, where she worked for over 20 years. Her colleagues affectionately called her "Momma Marie," a testament to her nurturing nature. Before that, she worked as a teller at Wells Fargo Bank and as an office manager at KJ Electric. Marie was always a people person, and this was reflected in every step of her career.
Marie enjoyed many simple pleasures in life. She loved playing games on her iPad, talking with her son daily, and speaking with her cousin Claire, whom she grew up with, every night. She also enjoyed shopping and going out to lunch almost every day with her sister Pat. Weekends were often spent at her vacation home in White Mountain Lakes with her close family, a tradition she cherished for the past 17 years. Marie had a passion for collecting angel figures and gardening in her yard. Her dog Calvin was especially precious to her, and they shared an inseparable bond, passing away on the same day.
Marie and her husband Marty were married for 36 loving years before his passing in 2003. She was an amazing cook, particularly known for her Italian dishes, and she took great joy in cooking for others. Family was everything to Marie, and she dedicated her life to nurturing and caring for those she loved.
Marie passed away on August 27, 2024, with her son, sister, and brother-in-law by her side. She is survived by her son Luke, her sister Patricia Gross and brother-in-law Al Gross, her brother Sal Mattera and sister-in-law Joann Mattera, as well as her cousins, nieces, great-nieces, nephews, and grand-niece Zelda. Our hearts are broken as we say goodbye to such a loving and remarkable woman. May you rest in peace, Marie, reunited with your beloved husband Marty.
A service to celebrate Marie's life will be held at Phoenix Memorial Park on September 4, 2024, from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. A mass will follow the next day at St. Joseph Catholic Church at 10:00 a.m.
