Patricia Akehurst

18 mars 192524 juin 2020

Patricia “Pat” Orrock Akehurst passed away on Wednesday, June 24, 2020 at the age of 95 with family members at her side. She and her husband, Don Akehurst, moved to the Beatitudes senior campus in Phoenix, AZ in November 2016 from Lubbock, TX where they had resided for over 30 years.

Patricia was born in Treherne, Manitoba, Canada on March 18, 1925 as the youngest of eleven children. Growing up on the family farm, she received her education in a one-room schoolhouse through the 8th grade. With no high school in the rural farming community, Pat left home at age 16 to find a job in a nearby city. By the time she was 21 years old, she had succeeded in realizing her life-long dream of becoming a model. For at least two years of her modeling career, she was one of the most photographed models in western Canada. She also served as the model supervisor.

Patricia moved to the United States in 1963 and became a naturalized citizen in 1969. In the US, she worked in the grocery industry for several years.

Pat was a consummate hostess who delighted in entertaining family and friends. She played golf, bridge and other card games, and enjoyed vacationing on cruise ships. She will be remembered by many for her grace, kindness, fierce loyalty and love of family.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Sydney and Edith Orrock, ten siblings, and her son, Edward Roy Heintz. She is survived by her husband of 42 years, Donald Akehurst, her son Roy (Rhonda) Heintz of Costa Mesa, CA, 3 step-children: Tom (Debi) Akehurst of Sherrills Ford, NC, Kathy (Paul) Reed of Forest Falls, CA, and Judy (Lyle) Cherry of Phoenix, AZ, 7 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Due to COVID-19, services will be held at a later date.

My admiration for Auntie Pat was exemplified in so many ways; how gracefully and beautifully she aged, her keen wit, her charming and dignified confidence, her creative tenacity to produce the genealogy of the Orrock family, and significantly as a nonagenarian, her autobiography, “The Eleventh Child”.
A testament to her loyalty to family was in the devoted effort to keep us close over the miles with her phone calls . The cherished visits around the globe to see to family members will be fondly remembered.
She was loved by a caring dedicated family and legions of friends. She will be sorely missed by so many. With fond memories of a delightful and lovely lady,

Aunt Pat was a beautiful, loving person who brought joy into our lives. Knowing Patti, this verse would be her words to us all in saying Until We Meet Again.

I just wanted to let you know that I made it home

Everything is so pretty here, so white, so fresh, so new

I wish that you could close your eyes so you could see it too

Please try not to be sad for me

Try to understand, God is taking care of me

I'm in the shelter of His hands

Here there is no sadness, no sorrow, and no pain

Here there is no crying, and I'll never hurt again

Here it is peaceful, when all the angels sing

I really have to go for now...I've just got to try my wings

PS....I'll be the first face you see when you get here|

Memorable photo of our beautiful ladies. Great to see cousins, Pat and Pearl, enjoying themselves on Holiday together. Sorry for your loss, but thank you for such wonderful memories.

Mom, Of the thousands of photos taken of you I know this is your favorite.. It was the moment when you visited the "Big City" of Winnipeg and saw electric lights, running water and street cars
for the first time. You made up your mind right then and there to move to Winnipeg and become a fashion model. Quite the dream for a pigeon toed 5 year old farm girl from Treherne but you achieved it nonetheless. The style and grace that made you a success professionally was also evident in the way you lived your life. Your word was your bond, you kept your promises and you stood by your decisions. I love you and I'll miss you forever.

Pat has been an inspiration to the McQueen, Saarits and Steggles families for a very long time. We have treasured our relationship with Pat and Don and know their love for each other and everyone in their lives was just like our parent's love. I will miss our phone calls very much but I know Pat is already the most incredible angel, so loving and welcoming. She will be greatly missed.
