Peter was my Dr. When I was 17. He fixed my knee and at 56 it's  still going strong. I think of him often. I will never forget how kind he was and reassuring.

Peter and Jan were our neighbors before we moved to Sedona, AZ. They are lovely people and Peter was an amazing human being. One Sunday afternoon my right knee locked up from an old meniscus tear. I called Peter and he said be in my office at 8:30 in the morning and we will take care of this. My knee is still going strong. He was generous and caring to everyone. He was also fun loving and a super athlete as noted in his obituary. Jan would tell us about his latest Adventure like Helliskiing or hiking the next tallest summit. He had such a clever sense of humor and could always make you laugh, just at life’s little subtleties. I wish I had spent more time with these beautiful people. Sending love and hugs.

Jan and family, my sincere condolences be with you. It was my pleasure to call Peter a friend and teammate with  Sun m.c. race team. I first met Peter in the old shop at the river bottom in Tempe in about 1973. I was still in the USAF at the time,and it was apparent from the start ,Peter was laid back with a twinge for adventure, and an underlying competitive drive that was subtly applied. Understatement could have been his middle name, intellectual dry wit waiting at the appropriate moment, never overdone but just right to zing ya,if you were paying attention. We rode together with Tony T. to Baja for the 1st. yr. that team Sun raced Baja 500 .Great trip,will be remembered for life. Peter will be forever part of the brotherhood of camaraderie that has carried on within Team Sun for over 45 years. Godspeed brother, you will be missed but never forgotten.      Chris Tyler

Peter was a 4th year student on my medicine service when I was an intern . We hit it off and I found myself covering for him when he went off skiing lot motorcycle riding in the Appalachians. He was a character and very independent. We were both shocked when we ended up practicing in Scottsdale and even though I was not in his outdoor sports and high adventure, Claudia and I still remember Jan and Peter’s Christmas party where we made new friends . We send our deepest sympathies to Jan and family and my memory of him will always be of his over the top energy and him taking care of my tennis injuries. Dr. Herwick is a memorable physician due to his graciousness and respect for all those with whom he came into contact.  As a radiologic technologist who worked with him in operating and emergency rooms, he always took time to say a few words and mentor those of us willing to share a moment. He had a coolness about him that nothing ever seemed to cause him to even raise his voice.  He was just an all-around kind person.  My condolences to his family and know his life was a celebration.

Dear Jan, I was so saddened to hear about Peter's death.  Please accept my most heartfelt condolences.

I first met Peter in 1974 when I started working in the ED at Scottsdale Memorial Hospital.  He was a friend and mentor in those early emergency room days.  I stayed in the ER as Peter became an orthopedic surgeon.  We worked together over the years on the many cases I referred to him.  I was always most comfortable when he was the ortho on call.

I remember Peter's wonderful wit and sense of humor.  He had such great stories about his many adventures.  I remember the story about him treating his own episode of pulmonary edema when he climbed Mt. McKinley.  He may have only lived 75 years but he crammed twice that into the time he had on this earth.

Of course I remember spending time with both you and Peter and visiting your home in PV.  

I mentioned his passing to my former colleague and good friend Bill Kuchar who also asked me to give you his condolences as well.

I didn't get to see him much since his cancer diagnosis and treatment but I'm glad he beat that, got to retire and spend the rest of his time with the people he loved and doing the things he loved too.  Rest in peace my friend.  Michel

I was saddened to see that Dr. Herwick passed away.  I had the privilege of working with him for many years at Scottsdale Memorial/Scottsdale Healthcare.  I am a nurse leader and I managed the orthopedic unit at Osborn for 10 years.  Dr. Herwick was always respectful and friendly with all the nurses.  He was so brilliant and kind to his patients.  I recall when he retired in 2004 and we were all afraid of his cancer diagnosis.  Of course, he kicked Cancer's butt which was such a wonderful story.  He had the greatest smile, bluest twinkling eyes and he always had a great story of his latest adventure.   God Bless you all as you grieve his passing.  He was a remarkable man and physician. I was at UVA with Peter and was his intern when he was a 4 th year medical student and he had already made up his mind to be a bone fixer so did not have a lot of enthusiasm for a medicine rotation I mainly covered for him when the snow was right go skiing or the mud was right for his motorcycle . It was a surprise for us both when we met on the orthopedic floor at SMH Osborne. I saw him as a patient for my tennis 🎾 elbow and I would put him a half hour behind in his all ready behind schedule. He was a good orthopedic doc because he suffered most of the injuries that his patients had. He was a character and could talk your ear off. I liked him enjoyed listening to him and we shared a past. He and Jan always had a great Christmas party and the noise level was often due to Peter’s conversations. He was smart and had a memory like a steel trap. Jan and family you have my severe sympathy but tell him when I join him in heaven I want to go with him on his speedy excursions as he won’t need coverage.

I was saddened when I came across Dr. Herwick's passing. In 1992 Dr. Herwick saved my life in the trauma center of Osborn Hospital. I was given 48hrs to live and Dr. Herwick never gave up. He was there for me and my family every step of the way. I remember his enthusiasm for outdoor sports/racing as we shared that in common. Dr. Herwick was truly working as the right hand of God. Please accept my sympathies for the loss of a true miracle worker...Dr. Peter Herwick.

I hope you feel surrounded by much love during this difficult time. I’m so sorry for your loss of your beloved husband, your dear heart Peter.
It was a pleasure and honor to care for Dr. Peter Hall Herwick at Paradise Living Center for two years.
It was also a pleasure knowing you Jan. I really enjoyed our conversations and listening to your adventurous love stories of you and Peter.
You both are an inspirational, beautiful couple.
From all the photos and videos I’ve seen, 
Peter lived a zestful life!
He did things that made him happy.
He left a great legacy being married for 50 years, raising a family, traveling abroad, and worked as a physician. I was happy to know that he worked on the Navajo reservation caring for my tribe. That I will forever be grateful!
My final thoughts of Peter is that he inspires me to continue to live happy to the end and be more adventurous, and perhaps I can do something a little daring. I’m not sure if I have the courage to jump out of a helicopter to ski down the mountain slopes like he did, haha
It was my privilege to know Dr. Herwick.
He will be deeply missed by all.

I heli-skied many years with Peter.  He mostly did 3 pins or snow boards.  His drive to keep going was always obvious with his constant grin.  No matter how many headplants he came up smiling  was ready to go again.  He read constantly and always had stories to tell about racing.  I was not a close friend, but felt very close because of his outgoing personality.  Celi my wife and I will miss him, but will never forget him.  A great guy who loved the outdoors.

Dad, you taught me the pursuit of all that is intellectual. With everything I learned as I grew, I saw your face. Thank you so much for reminding me that there can be a kind heart behind all that which is intensely expressed. Peter! Oh you will so missed. Your storytelling was always the highlight when together! You always had the ability to hold onto this child like enthusiasm for life. Every day was a new adventure and you cherished what was important. Even the adventure mishaps that occurred but even that was part of your life theme to overcome and push forward to seek the next experience. Growing up I knew Uncle Peter only during the family events that brought us together.  In my youth I percieved him to be larger than life with a warm heart and serious affinity for any outdoor activities that challenged him both mentally and physically.  My strongest memory of this was a shared family vacation that we took to Alta, Utah.  At the time I was maybe 10 years old and could not understand why Peter wanted to telemark ski from our condo to the mountain a mile or so away instead of riding with us in the car to the resort. 
        Looking back on this through the lens of my own life experience Peter was the first person to expose me to off piste skiing and was at the forefront of a culture that brought backcountry skiing to the mainstream. I did not understand it during that first trip but years later following college I was drawn back to the Rockies and later the the Sierra Mountains as I pursued my own passion for exploring the wilder and often majestic side of following the path less taken.  
        Rest in peace Peter, may you always find the fresh, untracked powder you taught me to search for.  With love, B. 

I only had the pleasure of meeting Dr Herwick once,  but in that time you could tell what a zest for life he had and how much family meant to him. We shared stories of motorcycling and travel and you could feel that his sense of adventure was unfathomable. He reminds us to live each day to the fullest. While I didn’t know him as well as others, I know he will surely be missed. Fair winds and following seas Dr Herwick. 

Dad lived life with such passion and purpose. He didn’t waste a single day. I feel privileged to have been his daughter, great full that he chose me to adopt and lucky to have so many wonderful memories. I love you Dad.
